Kovalchuk explained that deep space missions, such as the journey to Mars, will require the development of new types of space engines, including a rocket engine without plasma poles.
Kovalchuk said: “We have a cylinder that contains a compressed, light gas such as xenon or argon, but it is not a fuel. The gas first enters the first chamber, where it ionizes, forming electrical ions. Then it moves to the second chamber, which increases its speed to high levels, and is ejected through a magnetic nozzle, as is the case in a jet plane according to the Meshersky equation. The difference here is that the ions are what propel the vehicle instead of the burning mass.”
He pointed out that engines of this type were invented at the Kurchatov Institute in cooperation with Roscosmos and Rosatom decades ago, the first of which was the Morozov engine, which was designed in 1974 and is currently used for maneuvering in space, although it is not used for direct propulsion during flights.
He added: “Once studies and tests of the plasma engine are completed, it could become the main engine for long-distance flights.”
Kovalchuk also stressed the importance of establishing a space base on the moon to learn to live and work there, and to extract minerals, stressing that launching from the moon will be more economical because it reduces the burden by six times, allowing the construction of a launching station for deep space exploration.
