Is The Worlds Most Expensive Duvet Worth Its £1,000 Price Tag?

What’s the story?

than 1,100 years after Vikings began using down from the eider duck to keep warm, in 1956 the Stene family set up Norvegr in Trondheim, Norway – first crafting down sleeping bags, later expanding into pillow and duvet ranges using large, airy down. The brand now supplies several royal households around the world and its handmade duvets are used by Belmond hotels.

What makes it special?

The use of down (either goose or eider) rather than feathers makes the duvets soft and warm, but also very light. Having tested one out, we can confirm it’s like sleeping under a supremely cosy cloud. Norvegr’s specific weave of Egyptian cotton allows air to circulate perfectly and its top-to-toe pockets of down (rather than square ones) provide better heat flow. Before buying, customers complete a survey describing their sleep habits so a bespoke product can be created to suit their needs. It’s amazing quality – as long as your wallet is as well stuffed as these duvets.

What’s the eco factor?

The down of some of their duvets is gathered from abandoned eider duck nests on the Norwegian island of Svalbard. After midsummer, the mother and her ducklings head out to sea until the next year – at no point do the Norvegr team touch the birds. The goose down used in its other duvets is from animal welfare-certified European suppliers. Duvets and pillows can be repeatedly returned to Trondheim to be restored and refilled (at an extra cost). Do this every ten years and your duvet will last up to half a century.

What’s the cost?

You wouldn’t want to spill your morning cuppa over this bedding. A 90 per cent goose-down double starts from £977 for the lightest summer version, but prices reach £29,000 for Norvegr’s largest, warmest, limited-edition eiderdown duvet.
