The Haircut Men Should Never Get Micro Fringes Are The New Edgy Trend That Just Doesnt Work

Male hairstyles have undergone quite the evolution in recent years – from the bleached buzzcut to the post-Covid mullet and even the brief 80s perm revival. But now, a controversial new style has risen to prominence… ‘man bangs’.

While a fringe may suit the likes of hot young popstar Sabrina Carpenter, trimmed tresses can look less Farrah Fawcett and Joan of Arc when it comes to blokes.

Among the bold actors daring to broach fringe territory are Paul Mescal and Jacob Elordwhile most recently, British star Matt Smith appeared to reach for the scissors.

The star, who rose to fame as the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, showed off his fresh cut last week when addressing the crowd at a Q&A at a Paul Smith store in London.

There, he left fans stunned after going on a foul-mouthed rant at politicians over the ‘f***ing mess’ of the creative arts sector in Britain.

But while startled, many were likely too distracted by his blunt new locks to truly focus on what he was saying, with the choppy cut making him appear like a Jeremy Kyle guest than a respected thespian.

Suzi McGill, artistic director of the hair salon Rainbow Room International, explained that the look is difficult to pull off.

‘Full fringes can be tricky for men because they often dominate the face and hide its natural structure,’ she told the Daily Mail.

‘Men’s hair usually looks best when it works with the shape of the face rather than covering it, so softer layers or a side-swept style tend to feel flattering.’

Matt Smith ditched his floppy locks for something much shocking – a blunt, bold full fringe (seen in London last month at the The Death of Bunny Munro premiere in London)

Of course, it’s nothing new, with Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney testing the waters with the style back in the ’90s.

In a brief blip before returning to his slicked-back look, a younger George Clooney, then 34, arrived on the red carpet with a similar short style to Smith’s today.

‘His hairline has natural lift and a slight recession, which makes a forward-heavy fringe incredibly hard to control,’ Daniella Louise, Hair Educator at Fresha, told the Daily Mail of Clooney’s take on the look.

‘The fringe ended up highlighting the hairline rather than blending with it, so it rarely sat as intended.’

One year later, a fresh-faced Leo, then 22, gave the man fringe a whirl and posed in his 1996 headshot with his blonde locks cascading over his forehead.

It was one of the better looks, but Louise warned that using him as style inspiration might end in disappointment due to the difficult nature of the cut.

‘Men’s bangs are one of the most technically demanding cuts, and that’s why they don’t work for most men,’ she said.

‘A fringe sits directly on the heaviest part of the face, the forehead, so if the hair isn’t the right density or the growth pattern fights the shape, it collapses, splits, or sits awkwardly.

Hollywood’s heartthrob, 28-year-old Jacob Elordi, has even made the chop and gone for the full fringe look

‘Most men also have strong cowlicks around the hairline, which push the fringe in every direction except the one they want’

Those who watched E4’s hit teen drama Skins will remember the wet-looking bangs adopted by Jack O’ Connell while he played the, depending on who you ask, irresistible bad boy James Cook.

His look was desperately cool at the time, but take a look today, and the textured fringe might not receive the same reaction.

But fear of committing a faux pas hasn’t deterred Hollywood’s new set of cool young twentysomethings from giving the style a whirl, though.

Elordi, the star of Frankenstein, has traded in his usual, messy style for structured bangs – but according to Louise, it works against his favour.

‘He has a naturally relaxed wave and a long face shape. A full fringe shortens the face visually, which throws off his proportions and removes that effortless, elongated look his hair usually gives,’ she said.

Andy Heasman, International Creative Director at Rush, agreed, adding: ‘Jacob Elordi’s full fringe is far too heavy as it draws the attention away from his most dominant features.

‘Jacob’s square face shape is overpowered by the thickness and volume in his fringe, overshadowing all of his other features.’

While Elordi and his peers, like Paul Mescal and Timothee Chalamet, have gone for soft cuts, a daring Olly Alexander of pop band Years and Years opted for something a little risque – a micro fringe.

The 35-year-old, who also rose to critical acclaim as an actor in Channel 4’s It’s a Sin, opted for the bold and blunt ‘do repeatedly, including when promoting the hit series.

In the time since, he’s traded the look for something a little subtle.

But as we head into the new year, man bangs, if expert predictions materialise, will be in the spotlight for some time, and while they have the potential to work, there’s always a risk that they’ll flop.
