It might feel like you can’t pass a shop or a home today without spotting another ghoulish pumpkin, ahead of Halloween tomorrow. Depending on your outlook towards the preternatural, you may be thoroughly sick of orange tat.

But there is a centuries-old reason for Halloween to be held in such high esteem. Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, takes its name from All Hallows’ Day (otherwise known as All Saints‘ Day), a Christian feast still celebrated around the world on November 1.

Throughout history, and across all cultures, it has been a time of remembrancewhen we reflect on our loved ones who have died.

This is why we say the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, because so much collective energy is being focused on the dead. And even the most unspiritual non-believer is more likely to ‘see’ or sense a loved one who has died.

How do I know this? My experience as a medium over the past 26 years – connecting thousands of individuals with their loved ones, writing books and giving talks around the world – has taught me that death is not the end; it is just the beginning of a new existence.

But while it’s so much easier for deceased relatives to make their presence known at this time of the year, it’s common for them to communicate with us whenever we are thinking about them. One friend I know was with her family remembering their late father when his favourite whisky tumbler hopped off the drinks’ cabinet and smashed into smithereens on the floor.

The truth is we are surrounded by the afterlife at all times and are shown signs on a regular basis – if only we choose to see them.

And these signs don’t have to be stereotypical ‘paranormal’ instances. From the presence of a robin to a rose blooming out of season, there are lots of ways those who have passed on make their presence known.

In its simplest form, a sign can be a sight, a smell, a sound or even a feeling that tells you a loved one is there.

You don’t have to be at a seance or with a psychic. You can be anywhere: on a beach, out shopping or simply sitting quietly at home.

You may well scoff, but even medical experts have admitted there are things about the line between life and death that we don’t understand.

So read on to find out how to recognise these signs – and even encourage a visit from a lost loved one this Halloween…

ROSES

Roses are an extremely powerful symbol of love and devotion, so it’s no surprise they are the most likely flower to be a sign from a loved one telling you that they are close by.

My husband has one planted in our garden for his little girl in spirit. Amy was stillborn on September 1, and every year her rose always starts to bloom on that day and remains in bloom until Halloween. It shouldn’t still be flowering now – it’s outdoors and it isn’t the season. Yet hers will always flower at this time of year.

ELECTRICITY

Flickering lights indicating ghosts may seem like the preserve of Hollywood, but spirits really do love the energy of electricity, so changes to it can be a sign of their presence.

I have personal experience of this. Ever since a loved one passed one October several years ago, on the anniversary of their death my Ring doorbell always goes off at 5am. And it’s not just a dodgy connection, because the ring is always accompanied by a massive thump on the door straight afterwards.

Yet the video feed shows no one is there – and while our dogs usually bark when someone approaches the house, they never do on these occasions.

VISITS IN BIRD FORM

Dwelling in the air and seeming to straddle the physical and spirit world, birds are particularly powerful messengers from the other side. And different birds hold different meanings.

Swans famously mate for life and, for me, are about love and relationships. If, for example, you’re in a new relationship and see a swan, then a loved one from the other side – perhaps a late husband or wife – could well be sending you a message and letting you know they approve.

Robins are associated with joy, divine sacrifice and spiritual rebirth.

Meanwhile, seeing a hawk is a sign that you need to take a good, hard look at those around you. This could well be someone you love sending you a message to take it more slowly with a new partner or beware a friend with ulterior motives.

CANDLE GAZING

There is a reason those fireplace videos on Netflix are so popular. The soft and warm image of the flicker of a flame allows our mind to drop into a relaxed, meditative state.

It means using a candle to contact a spirit is very simple. Think of your loved one and, if there is no draft in the room and the flame starts to flicker, then a spirit is with you and ready to communicate.

VISIONS

The most dramatic way in which spirits manifest themselves is in visions. This is where their physical form seems to be in the room with us.

Visions can appear to us at any time of the day or night, but they tend to occur when we are almost asleep or in that semi-conscious state we enter as we wake up.

When we are in a dream state, the waves of our brains are in what is known as a ‘theta rhythm’, and when a medium is connecting to the spirit world, their brain is in this state, too.

It brings them closer to the energy and vibration of the spirit world. During these periods, we find ourselves more open to signs from the afterlife.

HOW TO REACH OUT THIS HALLOWEEN

So how do you reach out to someone in spirit?

Sit quietly, with no distractions and start to think of them. As you recall images, memories and keepsakes, all of those energetic imprints will call them in. See it as akin to calling them, as though you’re picking up the phone, saying, ‘Mum, I’d like to see you today on Halloween!’

You might then feel as though there’s someone else in the room.

I teach at the College of Psychic Studies and students who have done this have reported a change in the atmosphere. Sometimes it will get very cold or very hot. They will see something out of the corner of their eye. One student even noted movement in some hanging dried herbs.

Or it could be a smell; if you don’t smoke but your dad or your grandad did and you smell cigarettes, then it’s him saying hello. Perfume is another sign. If you want confirmation it’s them, ask them to take the smell away, and then ask for it to be brought back.
