‘Barbara and I were teenagers going through puberty, basically similar hormonal shifts as my mom, and we were being awful to her as teenage girls can sometimes be,’ Bush Hager recalled.

‘And my mom started to cry, which is so unlike her. She’s from West Texas. She’s preternaturally calm, unflappable.’

Bush Hager said her dad then explained that their mom was going through menopause and told them to ‘go apologize.’

‘And we did. I’m glad he told us because it helped us sort of understand what was happening, which I think is such a sign of a wonderful partner. He was ahead of his time,’ Bush Hager added.

However, there are some symptoms that come with menopause, which include mood swings, hot flashes and insomnia.

Now, Bush Hager said that she’s going through perimenopause, the transition period between a woman’s reproductive years and menopause.

She said her most noticeable symptoms are ’emotional rollercoasters’ and ‘occasional insomnia.’

‘I thought at first that it was related to work or being in my 40s with more to worry about, my three little kids who I love, but no, it’s very hormonal,’ she told the outlet.

Thankfully, she knows what to expect, not only from her mom but also from her friends, like Hoda Kotb.

‘I have mentors and friends and colleagues who are ten plus years older than I am. I watched Hoda be like, “I’m having a hot flash!”‘ she shared.

‘So, I’ve had conversations that I don’t know that many 43-year-olds have had.’

Throughout the transition, she is grateful for her husband, Henry Hager, who has been supporting her.

‘I have this in Henry. He’s said, “You need to make sure you find a doctor to get the help you need,” because also men can feel the shift,’ Bush Hager said.

‘And it’s very new (for us), but for the last couple of months, he’s like, “Wow, this is different.” He’s been with me for 20 years! I spend the most time with him.’

The two got married in 2008, and have three children together – daughters Mila, 12, and Poppy, 10, as well as son Hal, six.

Bush Hager’s admission about menopause comes just months after she admitted live on-air that her husband gets ‘grumpy’ when she airs out her family life on TV.

‘He just believes we should have privacy as a family. So if I say something – maybe on this show – that gets pickup, he gets grumpy about it,’ Bush Hager said during a July episode of Today With Jenna and Friends, according to People.

She explained that it made her think twice about what she shares.

‘It helps me realize that I should be better for Mila, for Poppy and Hal,’ she said.
