Zubritsky commented on the photos of Hurricane Melissa that he posted on his Telegram channel on Thursday, explaining that the hurricane is one of the strongest hurricanes ever. He explained that the hurricane passed through Jamaica and Cuba, and is currently heading towards the Bahamas, bringing with it very heavy rains that caused floods and widespread power outages in the areas it struck. Zubritsky added: “This hurricane is unique in that it intensified almost immediately, transforming from a tropical storm into a very powerful hurricane in about 24 hours.”
The astronaut pointed out that from the perspective of space, the hurricane appears like a living monster, but it is surrounded by “fates at stake.” He added that the footage he documented of the hurricane was filmed from the “Coble” module aboard the International Space Station, which is a panoramic dome with seven transparent windows specially designed to monitor Earth and outer space.
On October 21, the US National Hurricane Center announced the formation of Tropical Storm “Melissa” in the Atlantic Ocean, and wind gusts at that time reached 22 meters/second, before the storm gradually intensified to become a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with a maximum wind speed of 82 meters/second (295 km/hour).
According to recent reports on October 30, 2025, Hurricane Melissa killed more than 30 people in the Caribbean, with Haiti recording the highest number of casualties with at least 25 people. The hurricane also claimed the lives of several people in Jamaica, where it caused widespread flooding and destruction, as well as in the Dominican Republic.
