A Stomach Doctor Says Weve All Been Eating This Fruit Wrong

It turns out most people have been eating one of the world’s healthiest fruits incorrectly – and in the process, throwing away a powerhouse of nutrients.

Gastroenterologist Dr Joseph Salhab, who regularly shares digestive health advice with his followers on Instagram, has revealed that peeling your kiwi could be costing you a long list of benefits – from better sleep to improved digestion.

‘Skin for the win! You’re leaving nutrients on the cutting board if you peel your kiwi,’ he said.

‘Eat it with the skin to get vitamin C and E – which support liver health and act as antioxidants – plus folate, magnesium, vitamin B6, and around 50 per cent fibre.’

According to Dr Salhab, eating the fuzzy skin of the fruit helps boost gut health, stabilises digestion, and even supports heart and liver function thanks to its dense nutrient profile.

He also shared that the humble kiwi has another surprising benefit – it can help you sleep better.

‘Have one to two kiwis about two hours before bed. They naturally contain melatonin and can support better sleep quality,’ he said.

The gastroenterologist went on to explain that regular kiwi intake has been linked with reduced oxidative DNA damage and faster digestive ‘transit’ – meaning food moves efficiently through the system, potentially lowering the long-term risk of colon cancer.

For those who struggle with the fruit’s fuzzy texture, Dr Salhab recommends waiting until it’s softer and fully ripe, or choosing a smooth-skinned gold kiwi instead

‘For constipation, kiwi is one of my first-line food treatments. It’s gentle, effective, and easy to add to yoghurt,’ he added.

However, he added a word of caution for those with allergies.

‘Some people may be allergic to kiwi, which can cause itching, swelling, or trouble breathing,’ he warned.

‘If you’ve had a reaction to kiwi, it’s best to avoid the skin and talk to your healthcare provider. Always wash the skin well before eating.’

With fibre than an apple, vitamin C than an orange, and sleep-supporting properties to rival herbal teas, it seems the kiwi – skin and all – deserves a permanent place on your breakfast plate.

Meanwhile, another medical expert with an interest in the digestive system previously detailed the foods she as a doctor would ‘never eat’ because they posed a bacterial threat to your gut.

California-based Dr Jessica Kiss shared a recent

shared the things off the menu for her: namely, reheated fried rice, stagnant picnic fare, anything containing excessive food colouring, and foods from a dented can.

Dr Jessica Kiss also revealed the foods that she would never eat as they could potentially pose a stomach health risk

She elaborated on each one, kicking off by explaining that fried rice was a ‘one-time eat situation’ due to the potential for bacteria contamination.

‘B. cereus, a type of bacteria, it comes out when boiled rice is left at room temperature for a while and then particularly is reactivated if you reheat it in the microwave not efficiently enough,’ she explained.

‘That’s because it makes spores, so it’s just not just as simple as killing the bacteria, you have to kill the spores, too, not worth it,’ the doctor continued.

Dr Kiss noted that it might be fine to eat fried rice in a rice cooker that’s on the ‘warm’ setting, but to totally avoid consuming it at room temperature.

In regard to picnic food ‘that’s been sitting out’, Dr Kiss advised skipping it ‘because your risk of foodborne illness is just too high’.

Foods that contain obvious food colouring were also best avoided, according to the medical expert.

‘This is probably one that’s not an absolute for me, but I’d say 99 per cent of the time I’m not going to eat things that are covered in food dye,’ she shared.

‘It’s just not good for your system, I don’t want to be pooping neon for the next week either, so I avoid that like the plague.’

Dr Kiss said that she would never consume fried rice that has been reheated, calling it a ‘one-time eat situation’

Her fourth food avoidance was eating anything that came out of a can that has been dented, out of fears of botulism.

This occurs due to the presence of botulinum toxin and can appear in foods that have been ‘improperly canned’ or fermented, per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

‘If a can is dented and I wasn’t the one that watched me drop it like right then and there, I’m going to be concerned about botulism,’ Dr Kiss admitted in the video.

‘Botulism is not a fun thing, so I just won’t eat it, it is not worth the dollar fifty if I had means to get a can that is not dented,’ she said.
