And while the apartment may be impressive, it is its exciting history with links to Barings Bank, the De Beers diamond company and the Russian Romanov Imperial family that could draw buyers in.
The location of Clarges, at 82 Piccadilly, was once the site of Pulteney Hotel owned by William Pulteney, the 1st Earl of Bath.
In 1821 the hotel was purchased by wealthy financier Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton, a member of the family who founded Barings Bank.

He replaced the historic hotel with a vast four storey brick and stone mansion which Alexander called Bath House.
The elaborate mansion at 82 Piccadilly then served as the Mayfair residence of the Baring family with visitors including Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel for several decades.
In the mid 1890s the mansion changed hands again and was purchased by Sir Julius Wernher, who controlled the legendary De Beers mining and diamond company and at the time was the richest man in Mayfair.
Sir Julius added several floors and attic space to Bath House which at the turn-of-the-20th century was the largest mansion on Piccadilly.

He kept part of his acclaimed art collection at Bath House and he and his socialite wife Alice, Lady Wernher, had a grand bedroom suite with day room, study and luxury bathroom at the top of Bath House.

Upon Sir Julius’s death in 1912 Bath House (and country house Luton Hoo) were inherited by Julius’s son Sir Harold Wernher who in 1917 married Countess Anastasia Mikhailovna, the daughter of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich Romanov of the Russian Imperial family.
Lady Zia, as she was later known, also enjoyed the panoramic views over Green Park, although she spent much of her time at Luton Hoo and another Wernher family property, Someries House in Regent’s Park (now the site of the Royal College of Physicians headquarters).
After WWII Bath House became too costly even for the wealthy Wernher family to maintain and the mansion was sold in 1960 and later demolished, replaced by an office building known as Clarges House.

Lady Zia, who was widowed in 1973, eventually downsized from Luton Hoo (now a hotel) to a large apartment at 15 Grosvenor Square where she died in 1977 at the age of 85.
In 2012 the Clarges House office complex was acquired by developer-landowner British Land who then redeveloped the site into Clarges Mayfair, a luxury apartment building, completed in 2019.
Designed by architects Squire & Partners, Clarges Mayfair has three basement levels and a nine storey Portland stone façade with hand-carved stone columns, floor-to-ceiling windows and bronze Juliet balconies
It contains 34 homes with specification and interior design by award winning Martin Kemp Designs the luxury design house whose clients include Tom Ford and Rolls Royce

Harking back to its history, Clarges Mayfair has its own exclusive entrance boulevard – Ashburton Place, named after the Baring family Ashburton Baronetcy.
But in a modern twist, the new building offers a range of shared amenities such as a resident’s lounge on the lower ground floor and a spa complete with on-site gym and a hydrotherapy spa.
There are also private treatment rooms, a dedicated female sauna and steam room and a further shared male and female sauna and steam area.
