I’ll say one thing about November – it’s not when I’m looking my best. While summer is all about dewy skin, (fake) tans and beachy hair, by winter my beauty look is about chapped lips, a red nose and dry, knackered skin. It’s not the vibe I want to channel for party season, which is why this time of year is the moment to bring out the big guns in terms of skincare – and thankfully, that doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.

From rich moisturisers to transformative tanning lotions, there are loads of budget-friendly products that pack a punch when it comes to making us look less grey and tired in winter. You might be battling off your fifth cold of the season or riding out your Christmas party hangover, but with these buys recommended by the You magazine team it doesn’t necessarily need to be obvious.

‘E.l.f’s lip oils are super easy to apply – no mirror needed, and, importantly no need to take off gloves a la Vaseline if applying while out on a cold winter’s walk, as product has a wand. Nourishing, pretty and a bit like Dior.’

‘I like using this on my lips before lip balm. Skin on your lips is similar to eyes in that it’s thin, and this absorbs well. Lip balm is usually an occlusive, meaning that it forms a protective barrier that prevents moisture loss. If I only use that I find my lips dry out because there’s no moisture getting into the tissue of the lip, so using this to hydrate before applying a bog standard balm really sorts out a chapped lip.’

‘When I turned 26 my right arm developed what doctors call ‘keratosis pilaris’ and what I call ‘bobbles’. In winter, the bobble situation gets much, much worse. Anyway, over the last three years I have tried approx one billion different moisturisers, hoping that one of them might de-bobble things. This moisturiser comes the closest to helping. Plus it smells of nothing, doesn’t take ages to rub in, and is cheap. I use it every day now and the rest of my body – including my very un-bobbly left arm – is happier for it.’

‘I get seriously dehydrated skin in the winter, and this moisturiser (first recommended to me by a dermatologist) is like a big glass of water for the face. It’s full of hyaluronic acid, which is great if parched skin is your biggest issue.’

‘So terrified am I of leaving the house without my trusty tin of lip balm that I have one in every bag. It looks cute, smells of roses & leaves a sheer healthy glow. Oh, and one tiny £2.50 tin lasts forever.’

‘I always have this in my bag for days when I look terrible.’

‘It’s thick – so not for the oily-skinned. But, it’s the only product that gives me long lasting moisture throughout the day. I use it morning and night. In the evenings, I really layer it on and let it sink in overnight.’

‘I use this as an overnight treatment to soothe and moisturise dry and/or cracked lips.’

‘Central heating combined with icy blasts of air outside can make my skin look haggard at this time of year. A spritz of this helps a lot.’

‘A pharmacist told me to get this for eczema under the eyes – it’s very good for dry skin issues in winter, as well as a lip balm.’

‘I’ll be wearing this product until I die – it moisturises me whilst making me look alive. Also so perfect for making all the festive occasionwear look 10% fabulous! Compared to all the expensive fake tans I have used this is the least streaky and best colour (don’t look like an oompa Loompa).’

‘Soaks in well, fully hydrates, isn’t greasy, improves texture and appearance, really soothing.’

‘A comforting cheap treat. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter really hits the spot for a quick nurturing slick to dry wintry skin. Bonus, it’s comforting chocolately scent feels positively seasonal.’

‘I see no reason to spend on a cleanser – you wash most of it down the sink, after all – and this one’s as good as those twice the price. Gentle on dry winter skin and with a luxe texture.’
