The tiny pink Lucchese cowgirl boots dangling from Kailee Zak’s hand were several dozen sizes smaller than the colossal 26EEE pair the famed Texan company once made for American wrestling legend Andre the Giant.
But their impact was no less outsized when she lowered them slowly in a TikTok reveal to show her unborn daughter’s intended name emblazoned on the wall behind.
‘The most special name to us,’ Zak captioned the post. ‘So excited for our girl to be here.’
Moments before, she had discussed with her husband Clayton the feeling that their unusual choice of Lukacey Lynn (pronounced Lou-Casey) might ignite debate.

‘Are we sure this is right? Are we crazy?’ the 22-year-old from Central Texas remembers asking him ahead of posting the video.
‘”What the heck is wrong with this lady?”‘ she told the Daily Mail, summing up much of the reaction. ‘I was expecting backlash and some hate but I was not expecting thousands and thousands of comments and the crazy attention that it’s gotten.’
Zak, who is due to give birth in December, wanted a sentimental and meaningful name that reflected both her personality and family history.
She owns than 40 pairs of cowgirl boots and is particularly devoted to Lucchese, the luxury Texas bootmaker whose handcrafted boots can range from around $395 to than $16,500 for bespoke or exotic-skin pairs.

Kailee Zak, 22, received a backlash online after sharing that she plans to name her baby girl Lukacey Lynn, inspired by Lucchese boots

Over the years since it was founded in 1883, plenty of giants aside from Andre have walked in Lucchese boots – including Elvis Presley, John Wayne, presidents from Lyndon B Johnson to George W Bush, Melania Trump, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey and Taylor Swift.
They remain a firm fixture of the Western-fashion influencer scene that Zak has one well-clad foot in.

She opted to spell Lukacey with a ‘k’ to reflect her own first name, Kailee, as well as that of her son, Kayson, 4. The middle name, Lynn, honors Clayton’s late mother, also a Lucchese devotee – as is Zak’s sister.
‘My husband absolutely loved it,’ she said. ‘Both his parents have passed away, so me and our son and my family are all he has. Naming our baby Lukacey Lynn after his mom is so special to him.’
Once her spectacularly stage-managed 20-second video went live, it racked up a million views in no time and the internet had thoughts – lots of them.
Some users were blunt: ‘A reminder we’re naming babies that will be adults.’ Others questioned the spelling: ‘Lukacey is a little too close to Lunacy for me…’ and ‘How the hell do you pronounce that?’ One wrote: ‘Me in healthcare reading this and thinking of leukocytes.’ ‘I’m a teacher. Don’t. Do. It,’ came an emphatic response. Another dismissed the decision entirely: ‘That’s Lucrazy.’

A cautionary tale was posted: ‘It’s so bad girl. Even with the explanation. As someone who changed their full legal name as an adult because of something like this, please don’t.’
There was a prediction of future bureaucratic nightmares: ‘Imagine a 42-year-old woman who will have to say out loud at the DMV: ‘Lukacey, L-U-K-A-C-E-Y.’
Zak shared her unborn daughter’s name on TikTok, where it was met with a wave of criticism – and some support – as thousands of people left comments

Zak was expecting some backlash but admitted to being taken aback at the response that her TikTok video received
And pop-culture comparisons, such as a reference to The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn, in which Bella and Edward name their baby with a mash-up of two relatives’ names: ‘What in the Renesmee?’
One woman urged her to reverse course: ‘Please unreveal it.’
Some users were just tired of unconventional baby names: ‘We really just be slapping random letters together and calling it a name these days?’

But there were also fierce defenders. ‘Am I the only one who actually loves it? I think it’s so different and beautiful,’ said one supporter. Another wrote: ‘Usually not a fan of ‘unique’ names but this is adorable, so girly.’ A third agreed: ‘I know someone named Lukacey! She loves her name.’
Zak was encouraged by one user to just ignore the noise: ‘Unpopular opinion… I literally love the name. Like yes, it’s a play on the boot brand, but in a tasteful, timeless way.’
She remains unfazed. ‘After I had my son I kind of forgot who I was as a person,’ she said. ‘It was really hard to look in the mirror and see myself as anything other than just a teen mom.
‘I was trying to figure out my life a little bit – and couldn’t really figure out what I was going to do or be.’

Rediscovering Western fashion – and the persona that went with it – changed everything.
‘It opened up doors and opportunities with me being able to work alongside a lot of Western brands. My videos revolved around boots – people always knew me as this girl.’
Zak admits to long having had a preference for standing out and knows that it might sound ‘crazy’ to others to name a baby after a boot brand but the choice speaks to who she is.
‘I was always known for being a little different. I never really fit into one friend group because I’ve done things a little extra and in my own way.

‘When everyone else wore heels to school ceremonies, I showed up in rhinestone cowboy boots,’ she said, laughing.
‘My friends and family have always known me as the girl with the statement boots and the most fun Western looks.’
Now a good proportion of the world does, too.
