Two parents want to make themselves at home — in a smaller dwelling.
Their adult daughter explained on the community forum Mums net that she’s worried about her aging mom and dad’s decision to downsize.
“They’re in their mid-60s and currently in a 3-bedroom detached home with a medium-size garden,” she wrote. “It’s a new-build home, but it’s getting to the stage where it’s starting to need maintenance and repairs.”
She continued, “They’re finding it too much trouble, even trying to get workmen in can be a headache. The stairs are going to become a real issue soon due to injury and … the garden takes a lot of maintenance and is going to need the paving changed soon.”

Due to all of these factors, her parents have chosen to relocate.
“They’ve decided to move to a new-build ground floor, 2-bedroom flat,” the daughter said. “They want to futureproof and don’t intend to move again.”
Despite worrying that her parents will regret the move, the daughter noted the positives of the new home’s convenient location.
“It’s literally a 5-minute walk from a large supermarket, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers, doctors and a health center,” she said. “There are 4 buses to take them the 20 minutes into the nearest city and a train station 2 minutes away that can have them there in 5 minutes.”
The mom and dad will also be familiar with the area since “they’ll only be a few miles away from their current home,” the daughter added.

Wanting outside opinions, the daughter asked the Mumsnet forum how they felt about aging parents moving into smaller homes.
“They might regret it for a while as they get used to having less space, but they sound like sensible people who realize they have made the best decision, even if they miss their old home sometimes,” one reader replied.
Another person said, “My parents downsized and absolutely love it.”
