The ability to observe and even communicate with ghosts, spirits and the supernatural world has always come naturally to Australian spiritual healer and medium, Caterina Ligato.

So when the renowned co-host of The Australian Ghost Whisperer podcast and YouTube recently visited a haunted guest house, she instantly sensed it was alive with spiritual happenings.

Urged on by the strong presence she felt, Caterina was prompted to take a photo of one of the rooms. On first glance, it revealed nothing unusual.

But when she later reviewed the image with her co-host James Jennings, they zoomed in and immediately spotted something unsettling: a close-up of the mirror revealed what appeared to be a ‘demonic apparition’.

It’s all par for the course for Sydney-based Caterina, who told Daily Mail she’s been communicating with the spirit world ever since childhood.

Recalling her psychic abilities from as young as four, Caterina says she has ‘been able to communicate with people from the spirit world’ ever since.

‘I don’t know how I figured it out, but I just had this inner knowing they were from the spirit world.

‘I knew I was speaking to people who weren’t in physical reality – just the way they looked and the way they came through,’ she explained.

‘As I got older, people started coming and asking for my help. Eventually, it became a full-time career and I’ve been doing this for the last 30 years.’

No two days are the same in Caterina’s line of work, but one thing she’s regularly asked to do is assess and clear haunted houses.

Surprisingly, she believes around ’90 per cent of homes have some sort of spirit or entity’.

‘Spirits and lost souls truly are everywhere,’ Caterina says. ‘Many souls die and are afraid – they just linger in the physical world. So there’s often a spirit in people’s homes.’

Caterina notes that a house’s likelihood of being haunted has little to do with appearance or age, although it’s far common in older homes, which ‘have a lot history’.

‘Overall, it’s quite simple for a spirit to enter a premises,’ she explains. ‘They can follow you home. Or you might host a party and someone brings it in.’

If you suspect an otherworldly presence has taken up residence in your home, Caterina says there are always subtle clues.

‘Some houses will have a spot that’s always chilly, even with the heaters on,’ she notes.

‘You may even feel uncomfortable when walking into a particular area of the house.’

Sometimes, she says, the signs are much overt, such as ‘lights switching off and on, the sound of footsteps, cupboards left open or items going missing for no reason’.

She claims emotional instability within a home can occasionally also be caused by spiritual activity.

‘You might feel drained and extra emotional every time you’re home,’ she explains. ‘Or when you wake up in the morning, you might feel the strong urge to get out of there.’

‘Confusion or even an increase in arguments for no reason within a family can also occur.

‘Even children not sleeping well because they saw something can often be a sign of a presence,’ Caterina noted. ‘Children are very fresh from the spirit world, so their psychic abilities are strong when young – if they sense something, they’re usually spot on.’

If you’re among the Aussies trying to crack the tough housing market, Caterina recommends checking the spiritual energy of a home during open inspections, alongside pest and building reports.

‘When you inspect a house, just stand there quietly for a while,’ she suggests.

‘If you can, close your eyes and get a feel for the place. Ask yourself, “Does this feel right for me? Do I feel connected to this?”‘

‘If you start thinking, “No, I’m not sure” – walk away. It usually leads to trouble.’

However, Caterina says if you really love a house – even if there’s likely spiritual activity in it – there are ways to work around it by engaging a spiritual healer to perform a house clearing.

Caterina says it’s not always worrying to buy or own a house with spiritual inhabitants. But without a clearing, troubling issues may surface over time, with the most common effect being persistent fatigue.

‘Spirits roaming freely need a battery source, so to speak. They seek out energy and often absorb people’s energy during sleep.

‘That’s why so many people say, no matter how much sleep they get, they wake up exhausted. Something in the house is draining them.’

‘I always recommend having your home spiritually cleaned, especially after moving in.

‘Once it’s cleared, the spirits are sent back into the spirit world. Your home then also has a higher frequency, so you’re less likely to attract spirits.’

However, Caterina warns there are some cases where she’d strongly advise against buying or living in a home with overwhelming spiritual inhabitation.

In extreme situations, she says, the signs are unmistakable, such as ‘a real energy of aggression, coldness, even anger.’

‘These are the homes with banging noises, cupboards slamming shut, things falling off walls.

‘Some residents may even feel pinned down in bed or afraid to sleep.

‘There’s no doubt what’s happening in these homes – it can really freak people out. It’s right out of a horror movie.’

In these cases, her advice is simple: if you’re thinking of buying, walk away. If you’re already living there, try to move out as soon as possible.

‘I’ve come across some houses so heavily infested with demonic presences that it’s seeped through the walls and floors. Sometimes I just think the house should be burned down – but that’s in the most extreme cases.

‘In homes where activity cannot be cleared because it’s been there a long time, I always suggest you do your best to get out.’
