There’s one pearl of wisdom my old tabloid editor in London gave me as a young cadet that I’ll never forget.
It wasn’t the key to breaking exclusives or getting killer celebrity quotes. Her advice was brutally simple:
‘The world isn’t divided into rich and poor, Amanda. What counts is whether you’re beautiful. If you are, doors open. If you’re not, they don’t. Simple as that.’
At the time I nervously smiled – was my journalism degree a waste? Should I have invested in peroxide and boobs? (Full disclosure: I later invested in both.)

Decades later, I realised she was right – painfully so. Spend five minutes in Bondi and you’ll see pretty privilege everywhere.
Men need money or abs – ideally both. Women need glass-cutting cheekbones, curves and a backside you could hang your coat on.
After 20 years living in Sydney’s superficial east, I’ve seen beauty fast-track everything – from skipping queues to avoiding fines and getting ahead professionally.
And it’s not just Bondi. In our social media-obsessed world, looks are currency.

Big Brother’s Holly Young complained on national TV about the downsides of being beautiful
Let’s be honest: I’m not immune.
‘Big boob privilege’ is real, too. My ample bust had successfully negotiated many of life’s problems – from calming down parking attendants to diffusing angry strangers.
I’ve joked that being blonde and big-boobed could get you off a murder charge. That’s probably not that far off the truth.

Yes, I’ve whinged about them, too – but you’ll never catch me complaining on national TV about it.
Which brings us to Holly Young: a 31-year-old model and influencer – originally from Perth, now living in Bondi – who is starring on Channel Ten’s Big Brother.
Like the rest of Australia, I’ve spent the week feeling for Holly.
My thoughts, prayers, candles and crystals go out to her. Perhaps I’ll organise a rally now that I’m living in Melbourne. People seem to do that a lot here.

Because while some women battle grief, illness, disability or body image, Holly’s struggle is… being beautiful.
And she just wants the nation to know how hard it is.
While Abiola (right) spoke about the prejudice she faces being black and queer, Holly (left) said that being beautiful gives her ‘social anxiety’
Sports presenter Tiffany Salmond chimed in, claiming she was ‘uniquely qualified’ to speak on the subject of pretty privilege as she believes her sex appeal stalled her career at Fox Sports

Holly chose to share her agony just as fellow contestant and musician Abiola detailed, with genuine bravery, the daily abuse she faces for being ‘black and queer’.
Abiola said people don’t give her the time of day because they think she’s ‘gross’.
That was Holly’s cue to lament her own beauty:
‘Sometimes when a beautiful girl walks into a room, we don’t want to be looked at,’ she said, claiming that her looks give her ‘social anxiety’.

Oh, be still my bleeding heart! Forget cost-of-living woes – someone start a GoFundMe for Holly!
Even sports presenter Tiffany Salmond chimed in over on Instagram, saying she was ‘uniquely qualified’ to speak on the subject of pretty privilege.
She believes her sex appeal was part of the reason why Fox Sports stopped giving her freelance work as a sideline reporter. (The network said, off the record, there just wasn’t a role for her.)
Back to Holly: She doesn’t seem bothered that her beauty’s landed her modelling contracts, sponsored Instagram posts, and a Who’s Who of high-achieving exes.

Olympic champion Usain Bolt, a secret Manchester United footballer, Luxe Listings star Gavin Rubinstein… She didn’t seem to have any issues with them admiring her beauty as they showed her a good time.

Meanwhile, the prejudice Abiola endures is grim reality for millions: women who don’t fit narrow Western beauty standards, who are black, queer, or disabled – or even just not that ‘hot’.
Holly may have been front of the queue when the good Lord was handing out cheekbones, but she must have been fast asleep when tact was on offer.

Of course, pretty privilege has a flip side: unwanted attention, being objectified, having your genuine talents overlooked. I don’t want to downplay any of that.
But the perks – admiring glances, free drinks, golden opportunities – soften the blow.
Most disadvantaged groups get no perks at all – unless someone would care to enlighten me on the ‘upsides’ ofliving with chronic pain, for example.
Bondi breeds this kind of delusion. Everyone looks flawless, moves like an athlete and is surrounded by wealth, even if they’re not rich themselves.

In a world with so little to worry about, it’s easy to obsess over the supposed ‘downsides’ of your own beauty.
‘On balance, beauty makes life easier. It just does. It can make you rich, open doors to social advancement, and grant access to a privileged world others will never see,’ writes DailyMail+ columnist Amanda Goff
To be clear: I’d never dismiss the leers and wandering hands Holly, Tiffany and countless other girls have had to sidestep with a forced smile – or the snide jealousy of other women who resent them simply for being pretty.

Studies prove it. Bondi proves it. Hell, even Holly’s Instagram account proves it.
And whatever the drawbacks of being attractive are, they will never forge the kind of character, resilience or grit born from real adversity.
Pretty privilege isn’t a burden – it’s a golden ticket.
