Most of us roll our eyes when festive merch appears on shelves in October, so spare a thought for Lisa Cherry who starts prepping for the next Christmas on Boxing Day. Known affectionately as ‘Mrs Christmas’, Cherry travels the world sourcing festive products as the Head of Christmas at John Lewis. ‘Predicting what people will buy is risky – no one wants to end up with 10,000 unloved reindeer,’ she says.

If anyone can tell us how to celebrate Christmas 2025, it’s Cherry. So here are her festive trend predictions for the coming weeks – from the tree decoration we’ll all be buying, to this year’s must have toys.

Everyone needs a personality baubles

These days people love to buy one-off tree decorations – the quirkier the better. Felt has taken over from glass, and there are baubles dedicated to food and drink, gadgets and hobbies. ‘Our mouse with knitting needles is flying,’ says Cherry. ‘With most baubles under £12, they make great secret Santa presents. It’s a fun gift but it also shows a lot of thought. If someone’s going on a trip, you can buy them a suitcase to hang on the tree and there’s even a boxed engagement ring bauble.’ Meanwhile, over at Selfridges you can buy a Yayoi Kusama bauble (£40) or a miniature Harry Styles ornament (£40). Jab baubles have even appeared online – a syringe with ’fillers’ written on it and an Ozempic one, which became another TikTok sensation.

The hottest tree colour (no, it’s not green!)

December 6th is officially the ‘Big Treekend’ when Brits start putting up their trees. Traditionalists prefer green, but last year the fashion set went mad for red or pink. ‘This Christmas champagne gold is the fashionista’s choice,’ predicts Cherry, ‘And we’re seeing a lot of two-tree households. With the rise of social media, people like to do different styling. A tree in the kids’ bedroom can be wilder, while the family tree might be classic. Or you might have one indoors, and one outdoors.’ And to overcome the problem of ugly plugs and batteries, try USB rechargeable lights. ‘One charge will last eight hours for 7-10 days,’ says Cherry.

It’s all about the staircase

‘Decorating the front door is still popular, but dressing the staircase is such an easy way to welcome guests,’ says Cherry. ‘You wrap a couple of plain garlands around the bannister and through the balustrade, then add baubles and lights, to change the atmosphere of your house.’ Mantel-scaping with supersized wreaths also adds a bold theatrical flourish. You can invest in a DIY wreath-making kit or Lakeland has a Christmas Interchangeable Wreath with removable decorations (pumpkins and pinecones, apples, berries and cinnamon sticks, £39.99).

Build your own crackers

‘Buy a box of plain Christmas crackers which you can decorate and fill yourself with mini gifts and toys,’ says Cherry. It’s environmentally friendly and you don’t end up with naff plastic gifts. ‘Game crackers will be big,’ she predicts. Something to amuse the different generations during the post-meal slump.  The official Traitors crackers (£25), complete with missions, plot twists and murders, will be huge while Taskmaster has a set (£25) with tasks written by Taskmaster creator Alex Horne himself.

Noble Donkeys (and other gifts that do good)

There is a growing demand for ethically sourced gifts. As part of their Worldly Treasures collection, John Lewis has commissioned beautiful felt decorations from Made51 who work with displaced refugees around the world. Their Noble Donkey (£12.99) is already a hit; while over at the V&A there’s a focus on handmade and sustainable Christmas decorations – with a recycled wreath (£38) made from sari offcuts, a Fair Trade handmade wooden toy car (£15) and charming rococo felt animal decorations (£15 each).

Level-up your advent calendar

A poll by YouGov last December reported that a third of us buy ourselves an advent calendar, with 56 per cent securing theirs well before mid-November. ‘Food & drink calendars are up 37% on last year,’ says Cherry. ‘The Bird & Blend Matcha teas advent calendar (£55) is already trending.’  For coffee fans, there’s the Rise advent calendar (24 single origin speciality coffees, £40). Another classic advent calendar is Fortnum & Mason’s Tea & Biscuits Advent Calendar£100. Or you can break the bank with the Daylesford Organic Farm Shop Calendar£275 (posh groceries include chocolate sardines and a mini iced Christmas cake).

Make mine a bow

‘Last December I put a giant bow instead of a wreath on my door,’ says Cherry. ‘And this year bow mania is everywhere.’ John Lewis has giant fabric bows in gingham and pastel colours, and paper napkins with bows. Matalan do monochrome bow-themed plates; while Rockett St George’s glass bow baubles trimmed with velvet offer a luxe touch at the table. Tie ribbons around everyone’s cutlery or create your own oversized statement bows to drape over mirrors and doorways.

Toys have gone retro

Cherry predicts it will be a big year for traditional brands such as LEGO (celebrating its 90th birthday this year), Scalextric and Snoopy (which also celebrates its 75th birthday). Wooden toys often get passed down through the generations and you can now get a wooden air fryer toy (£30) and barista coffee machine (£12.50). Selfridges’ top-trending Christmas toys include products from Jellycat Fish and Chips, Noodoll, Sylvanian Families, Wicked, Pokémon and Hot Wheels. But Cherry will also be handing out disposable cameras at Christmas. In an age of instant gratification, kids love the thrill of waiting for pictures to be developed. ‘I gave one to my niece at my wedding to keep her entertained and her mind was blown.’
