Observing A Planet Similar To Fantasy Movie Worlds

The new planet reminds us of the planet “Tatooine” from the “Star Wars” film series, as its sky is illuminated by the sparkle of two stars, not one star.

The planet, called HD 143811 b, is a huge distance of 446 light-years from Earth. It revolves around what is known as a binary star system, where two stars orbit around a common center.

The new planet is classified as a gas giant, similar in nature to Jupiter, but much larger. It consists mainly of hydrogen and helium gases, and its mass is estimated to be about six times that of Jupiter.

The planet revolves around its two stars at a huge distance, 80 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Because of this vast distance, one year on this planet is equivalent to 300 Earth years, while the twin stars revolve around each other only once every 18 days.

Despite this distance, it is the closest planet of its kind, as it is six times closer to its stars than any other exoplanet previously discovered in a binary system.

What is striking is that the temperature on the surface of this gas giant remains very high despite its distance, reaching 730 degrees Celsius, meaning that it is much higher than the temperature of the planet Mercury, which is closest to our sun.

This discovery represents a very rare phenomenon, as the number of discovered planets orbiting two stars is very small out of thousands of known exoplanets. It is also very rare to obtain a direct image of such planets.

The importance of this discovery lies in giving scientists a unique opportunity to understand how planets form and evolve in multiple and complex star systems, such as the binary system.

What is interesting is that the planet was not discovered through new, direct observations, but rather through re-analysis of old archival data dating back to the period between 2016 and 2019, collected by several telescopes.

Two research teams, one from the University of Exeter in Britain and the other from Northwestern University in the United States, independently examined this data. The researchers noticed a faint light spot moving with one of the star systems.

To confirm that this faint object is a planet and not a distant star in the background, the British team had the time to use a telescope in Chile in July 2023. Within an hour of observation, the discovery was confirmed that the object is indeed a planet orbiting the binary star system.

One of the most exciting findings reached by scientists is that this planet is very young by the standards of the universe, as its age is estimated at only about 13 million years. As Dr. Jason Wang of Northwestern University explained, this age means that the planet formed 50 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs, which means it still retains much of the heat remaining from the moment of its birth.

Scientists are still unsure of the exact mechanism by which this planet formed in such a dynamic system. It is likely that the twin stars formed first, and then the planet formed later from the dust disk surrounding them.

Researchers, such as Dr. Vito Scochiariani, hope that this rare discovery will help set a new standard for understanding how planets form in binary systems, and will open the door to answering deeper questions, such as: Can habitable, Earth-like, rocky planets exist in such systems? Similar discoveries in the near future may answer this fundamental question.
