This research was conducted under the leadership of Professor P. Rawi Silva Ganapathi, and with the participation of Maeda Khorramabadi, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering.

The new method is characterized by the simplicity of its preparation, with its ability to facilitate the treatment of burns, tissue restoration, and even contribute to the production of laboratory meat.

The basic idea of ​​this innovation is to use a container to which the cells do not stick. The researchers observed that cells grown in silicone vessels avoid sticking to the surface of the vessel, and instead attach to each other to form a cohesive cell sheet.

Khorramabadi explained that the cells, instead of sticking to the vessel, stick together to form a lamellar structure suitable for applications such as covering wounds and treating burns.

Since these plates can be manufactured from the patient’s own stem cells, the risk of the body rejecting them is significantly reduced. This method also avoids the use of animal-derived stents or synthetic matrices, which may trigger immune reactions.

Performance tests showed that the cells remained active and healthy, as the researchers were able to determine the conditions that favor the formation of cell sheets. The silicone used is also biocompatible and non-toxic, two properties that are essential for future clinical applications.
