HGTV’s David Bromstad is opening up about his past struggle with substance abuse.
The beloved presenter, 52, is letting the cameras in on his personal journey in an upcoming special of My Lottery Dream House, titled David’s Happy Ending.
The hour-long episode, which premieres on the network on December 19, will follow the host as he renovates his new home in Central Florida.
Besides the highs and lows of the project, he also speaks candidly about his past battle with substance abuse and trauma.
Ahead of the episode airing, the designer talked about the challenges he faced during the renovation and credited art with saving his life on multiple occasions.
He said: ‘When things were the most difficult and challenging financially, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically, I knew that I never wanted to part from this incredible property.
‘It was because of this property and the will to want to create in it, the house saved my life.
‘As an artist and a creator having the outlet of designing, my house was the one thing that was keeping me going. This isn’t the first time art has saved my life.

‘Through substance abuse and not being kind to myself, the one thing that’s always remained secure and steady has been my creative talent.’
Speaking to TVInsiderBromstad added that it was important for him to be frank about his past struggles in the episodes.
‘I have a very blessed and incredible life, and I do know this,’ he continued. ‘But it doesn’t negate the fact that I’ve had really hard times in my existence.
‘I only allowed people to see the bright and shiny parts of me because that was all I was willing to accept from myself.
‘So, to tell my honest and unapologetically unique story has been something I’ve been looking forward to, but I didn’t want to rush it, and I wanted it to be at the right time.
‘You can’t have the bright and shining times without the darkness. I don’t push away the darkness.
‘I bring it in because I know the darkness only makes my bright and shiny parts shine that much bigger.’
Bromstad has fronted My Lottery Dream Home since it premiered on the channel in 2015. It is currently airing its 19th season.
