Aussie Shoppers Meltdown Over Disappointing Find In Her $55 Tony Chocolonely Advent Calendar

A Melbourne woman has been left unimpressed after discovering an empty compartment inside her $54.99 Tony’s Chocolonely advent calendar.

She had documented working her way through the premium countdown calendar when she reached December 10 and realised something was seriously off.

After a long day at work, the woman joked that she ‘could have burnt the house down,’ after opening the door marked ’10’ and finding absolutely nothing inside.

‘What the actual f**k,’ she said in disbelief in her video posted to social media

that has now amassed a staggering 490,000 views.

‘I’ve got my big a*s Tony’s Chocolate calendar and look at this… it’s Dec 10… nothing in the box,’ she continued.

On the back of the box, she found a printed note that read: ‘Not much to find here, huh? Bummer, because the cocoa industry’s unequally divided, so is our calendar.’

Her outburst may have been in jest, but it prompted a swift explanation from Tony’s Chocolonely, a company known for championing ethical chocolate production, but not everyone knows.

In a warm and lengthy reply, the brand thanked her for choosing their advent calendar, before clarifying that the empty door is completely deliberate.

‘At Tony’s, we are first and foremost an impact company, that happens to make chocolate,’ they wrote, confirming that ‘we exist to end exploitation in cocoa.’

Their empty December 10 compartment is designed to spark awareness of ‘inequalities in the chocolate industry’.

The brand also reassured Ella that she hadn’t actually missed out on any chocolate at all.

The Dutch confectionery company previously apologised for using the same tactic in 2021 and for causing ‘confusion and disappointment,’ but has brought it back once .

It sparked heated backlash on social media at the time, as many were left wishing they’d opted for a cheaper Cadbury calendar instead.

This year however, Tony’s said that customers were given two treats in the number nine door to make up for it and also received 25 chocolates behind 24 doors in total -with another surprise closer to Christmas day.

Seasoned Tony’s fans chimed in on Ella’s post too, explaining that the empty-door stunt is, in fact, nothing new for the company.

‘Tony’s whole brand is about being educational and political idk why this is surprising lol,’ one commenter wrote.

Her shocked reaction quickly prompted Dutch-brand Tony’s Chocolonely to explain that the empty compartment was intentional – a statement on cocoa industry inequality from a brand focused on social impact

‘This is super on brand for Tony’s and they do it every year and make up for it with two on another day,’ another reminded her.

Others were a little blunt, asking why she bought from Tony’s at all if she didn’t want commentary built into the product.

‘You literally got two the day before. Lol.’

‘You should absolutely care about the exploitation in the cocoa industry,’ another echoed the brand’s ethos.

Despite the meltdown, and the premium price tag, Tony’s insists its advent calendar still delivers chocolate than most, along with a deliberately heavy dose of social impact messaging.
