An Aussie family was torn apart after their daughter won the lottery jackpot, with the explosive fallout becoming the talk of the town.
Their sad story came to light after one curious person prompted a fascinating discussion on Redditasking: ‘Do you know anyone who won the lottery in Australia?’
A woman replied to the thread, revealing that her close family friends in Perth caused a feud lasting decades after stealing their daughter’s winning ticket.
The family had been playing the same lottery numbers every week for years.
Before one of their family holidays, they decided to pay in advance for several weeks of lottery entries so they wouldn’t miss any draws while they were away.
But things took a turn when the daughter asked her parents to mind her tickets.
‘Parents also played regularly and had their own numbers that were different,’ the woman explained.
‘Surprise surprise, the daughter’s numbers came up and her ticket won first division.
‘All hell broke loose when the daughter returned expecting to have the winning ticket, which the parents swapped and said was theirs.’

The woman said she was just a child when the family’s chaos took place, but she still remembers vividly how the ‘lying’ couple ‘scammed’ their own daughter.
‘Absolutely diabolical stuff,’ she said.
‘The news swept through my family – they were close family friends – and the entire neighbourhood.
‘It was all people were talking about, and it broke that family up for decades. The daughter and her family moved continents.’
After the ugly rift, the woman said she lost touch with the family.
‘We stopped being their friends,’ she explained.
‘I am told they only reconciled because the mother was dying of cancer.’
Decades after the lottery drama, the woman said many people from the family’s hometown are still angry at the parents over what they did to their daughter.
‘Both parents are now dead and we still occasionally talk about this,’ she said.
‘People are still disgusted over 40 years later.’
