This week we’re heading for Languedoc, southern France – my go-to for great-value reds. Once known for bulk wine, this sunny region between Provence and the Pyrenees has reinvented itself, with investment transforming its vineyards and wineries. Grapes such as Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan make full-bodied reds brimming with ripe fruit and savoury spice – the kind you’ll want to curl up with all winter.
Juicy plum and forest-berry notes laced with baking spice and a soft, rounded texture make this an easy pour for a midweek chilli or stew.
Perfumed with red and black fruit, this supple blend gains depth from 20 per cent Merlot and feels a lot pricier than it actually is.
Dark fruit and spice meet a herbal- mineral edge in this silky blend: with its light grip and savoury finish it’s ideal with steaks and slow-cooked meaty dishes.
Brimming with wild berries, this deep purple old-vine Carignan, with a dash of Grenache, serves up character and cold-weather comfort at a superb price.
