Once known for bulk wine, this sunny region between Provence and the Pyrenees has reinvented itself, with investment transforming its vineyards and wineries. Grapes such as Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan make full-bodied reds brimming with ripe fruit and savoury spice – the kind you’ll want to curl up with all winter.

Brimming with wild berries, this deep purple old-vine Carignan, with a dash of Grenache, serves up character and cold-weather comfort at a superb price.
