NEED TO KNOW

  • A Ryanair flight from Italy to Scotland attempted to land multiple times on Oct. 3 amid Storm Amy
  • A passenger on board told the Daily Mail, “People were praying and my son was crying. I remember thinking, ‘Is this it?’”
  • The plane landed safely in Manchester nearly two hours after its first attempt at Prestwick Airport

Passengers on board a Ryanair plane that landed with less than six minutes of fuel are speaking out about the terrifying flight.

On October 3, Ryanair flight FR3418 — operated by Malta Air — was set to take passengers from Pisa, Italy, to Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Scotland, per Flightradar24. However, the flight tracker reported on X that the plane issued an emergency distress code squawk 7700, saying it was likely a “fuel emergency.”

According to the flight path, the Boeing 737 made two unsuccessful attempts to land at Prestwick Airport amid high winds. It later tried to land at Edinburgh Airport, but was once again unsuccessful.

“I was on the flight with my family and found the whole thing really distressing,” an unnamed passenger told the Daily Mail. “The three failed landings were like something you’d watch in a disaster movie.”

The flight was impacted by strong winds and heavy rains from Storm Amy, formerly known as Hurricane Humberto. According to The Weather Channelthree people died and thousands lost power as a result of the storm.

The passenger added: “I have never experienced anything like it before. People were praying and my son was crying. I remember thinking, ‘Is this it?’”

Eventually, the plane landed safely at Manchester Airport, almost two hours after its first landing attempt at Prestwick, according to local outlet The Herald.

Another flyer, Alexander Marchi from Ayrshire, told the Ayr Advertiser passengers had no idea about the severity of the storm until after they were out of the air.

“We realized how bad things had been after seeing the images after finally landing at Manchester with almost no fuel,” he said. “There was a lot of relief. People were wanting to get off and definitely were not up for flying any time soon but there was no panic.”

He added: “A few people had felt ill from the turbulence but overall everyone was just in shock and the staff were brilliant… We arrived at around quarter past four in the morning, about 10 hours late.”

Information obtained by The Aviation Herald showed the plane reportedly landed with 220kg fuel, which is below the minimum fuel level.

This is only enough fuel for an aircraft to fly for five to six minutes, the Herald reported. A jet like Ryanair’s must have enough fuel for at least 30 minutes of flight time.

“Ryanair reported this to the relevant authorities on Friday (3 Oct). As this is now subject of an ongoing investigation, which we are cooperating fully with, we are unable to comment,” Ryanair told the outlet in a statement.

The U.K.’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch also told the Herald“The AAIB has commenced an investigation into a serious incident involving an aircraft which was diverted from Prestwick to Manchester Airport on Friday 3 October. AAIB Inspectors have begun making enquiries and gathering evidence.”
