- One of the cruisers explained on Reddit that their boyfriend will be 20 at the time of sailing
- According to Carnival’s minor guest policy, those under 21 need to sail with a guardian over the age of 25
A couple’s plans to sail a Mexican cruise turned upside down after Carnival allegedly told them they couldn’t board without a “guardian.”
In an Oct. 6 Reddit post in the r/CarnivalCruiseFans forum, a user claimed they booked a five day Mexican Riviera cruise on the Carnival Radiancestarting on Nov. 1. The original poster (OP) explained that they are 20 years old, but will turn 21 this month. Their boyfriend is 20 and will be at the time of the voyage.
“I just got an email saying we are not able to go without a ‘guardian’ and that anyone that is under 21 must be accompanied by a guardian over (the) age of 25,” the OP wrote.
“First of all, this doesn’t make ANY sense to me,” the upset cruiser said. “In my opinion, we should be able to travel alone over the age of 18… We are also Canadian so I didn’t even think about the age of majority of 21.”

According to Carnival Cruise Line’s official minor guest policyguests are required to be 21 years old on the day of departure to travel alone. Guests 20 years old or younger “must travel with a relative or guardian 25 years of age or older” and their guardians do not need to be their legal guardian.
Guests ages 18 to 20 do not have any restrictions on where their rooms are in relation to their guardian, but they must be linked as “Travel With” a guardian of age. Exceptions are made for legally married couples and qualified military personnel.
So, the OP made a request to those reading their post: “Is there anyone here who also happened to be attending the same cruise that would be willing to register as our guardian?”
They later added: “They are allowing to issue a refund, however we already booked non-refundable tickets to L.A. so we would still like to go if possible.”
In the comments, readers were shocked the couple was even allowed to book in the first place.
“I wonder why they let you book it. Odd,” one person wrote.
Others made suggestions on how to find someone who could be their guardian.

“Find your Facebook sailing group and I’m sure someone there wouldn’t mind,” one commenter said. “The issue is that if y’all do anything stupid, they are also liable for you. So don’t do anything stupid!”
To which the OP replied: “We don’t drink, so nothing stupid,” with a crying laughing emoji.
Later on, the poster added: “Thanks for all the advice, we found a couple attending the cruise that was willing to register as our companions.”
