Video footage captured the moment an Australian regional jet engine became engulfed in flames with passengers on board the aircraft.
The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Adelaide Airport, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. According to FlightRadar24the Rex Airlines plane was scheduled to depart for Broken Hill at 7:00 a.m. local time.
In a statement shared with ABC, the airline said the Saab 340B+ experienced a “cockpit indication” during departure and crews “rejected the take-off,” per standard procedures. They further explained to the outlet that after shutting down the engines, a portion of unburnt fuel ignited “for a brief period.”
Passenger David Edward Healy captured the moment on video. In his footage, taken from on board the aircraft, smoke and flames emerge out of one of the engines.
“Just before the plane lifted off the ground it started to decelerate very quickly,” Healy told Storyful. “As it did, a fireball appeared to be coming out of the left engine.”
Fellow flyer named Emma Lovis-Hotchin told ABC the plane came to a “screaming halt” shortly after an initial safety inspection.
“The smell in the cabin was pungent and it was getting hot there,” she said. According to the traveler, the plane quickly filled with smoke and the “smell of flumes.”
“I heard a gentleman down the back of the plane yell ‘fire’ and a man to the left of me yelled ‘fire’ too,” she added. “It got awfully hot, very, very quick.”

Luckily, all passengers and crew deplaned safely, with no injuries reported. Travelers were later transported via bus back to the terminal and “re-accommodated on alternate services,” according to ABC. A subsequent flight to Broken Hill successfully departed at 10:19 a.m., per FlightRadar24
“Our hostess was extraordinary in communicating with everyone. Commendations to her for keeping everyone calm on the plane,” Lovis-Hotchin said.
She added: “To the pilot who was in charge today, thank you very much. You deserve a gold medal .. I’m glad we all got off.”
A representative for the airport told ABC the incident shut down operations for about 20 minutes. Normal operations resumed around 8 a.m. local time.
