Russia Unveils A Model Of A “Martian Rover” That Converts Wind Energy Into Electricity

uaetodaynews.com — Russia unveils a model of a “Martian rover” that converts wind energy into electricity
The model will be tested on the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, according to Anton Rogachev, chief engineer at the Institute of Mechanics at Moscow State University.
Rogachev explained that the small rover weighs only about 70 kilograms, and relies on the Savonius turbine as a unit to generate wind energy through a vertical axis, noting that charging the robot requires a wind speed of about 10 meters per second.
It is expected that the rover will be used in the future on Mars to collect soil samples, study the atmosphere, and conduct scientific photography. The project team also plans to test the rover in different wind speed conditions in Kamchatka during the coming period.
The project was implemented with the support of the Scientific School of Moscow State University under the title “Basic and Applied Space Studies”.
It is noteworthy that the International Festival “Science 0+” has been held annually since 2006 in Russia and a number of other countries, on the initiative of the Rector of Moscow State University, Viktor Sadovnichy. The activities of the current edition were held in ten countries within the framework of the “Decade of Science and Technology” program launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The festival was organized by the Moscow government, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, and Moscow State University, with support from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As for Moscow, the festival activities were held from October 10 to 12 in more than 100 locations in the Russian capital.
