Grey’s Anatomy fans have been left devastated after it was revealed that fan favorite character Amelia Shepherd will be off screen until next year.
In scenes that aired during Thursday’s episode, titled We Built This City, it was learned that the beloved character played by Caterina Scorsone is taking a sabbatical.
According to DeadlineAmelia will not be on-screen for the next eight episodes.
The publication reports that the character’s hiatus is part of the show’s cost-cutting measures for series regulars, which sees veteran cast members appear in 14 out of 18 episodes per season.
Caterina, however, will only be starring in 10 out of 18 episodes, to tie in with Amelia’s sabbatical storyline.
In her last episode of 2025, Amelia struggled with her grief after the tragic death of Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales).
And, by the end of the installment, she had decided to take leave from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital indefinitely.
Fans expressed their heartache over temporarily losing Amelia, with some even vowing to boycott the show until her return.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one lamented: ‘No Amelia until NEXT YEAR?’
‘I am so serious though, text me when Amelia’s back from sabbatical in two months cause I won’t be watching Grey’s in the meantime,’ another declared.
‘She’s the only character they could give good storylines to. The rest of them are just running on plots we’ve seen in the show 12,348 times already.’
A third raged: ‘Amelia taking a break from the hospital, meaning that we won’t be seeing Caterina Scorsone until next year, when she’s been carrying must of the audience on her shoulders for the last like five (?) seasons… the writers really don’t know their audience.’
‘Amelia has been the backbone of Grey’s for the longest time, I’ll watch today’s episode but if she’s gone until 2026, I won’t be watching until she’s back, I can’t believe how they’ve treated her,’ another declared.
A fifth said: ‘This series just declines every year, never, at any time, would Amelia be away from Scout, and she wouldn’t even allow Link to be away from him.’
‘Caterina Scorsone, know I’m following you wherever you go but I’m NOT ready to lose Amelia Shepherd,’ wrote a sixth.
Amelia was first introduced in Grey’s Anatomy season seven after previously appearing in the spin-off Private Practice.

She is the sister of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and sister-in-law to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
While actress Caterina has yet to officially comment on her break from the show, her last episode of the year happened to air on her 44th birthday.
Taking to Instagram to celebrate, she posted: ‘Grateful for every breath that got me here, for every human that loved me to this place, for all the moments of life that delivered me to this one.
‘Today I’m so deeply rooted in my body, my community, my commitment to the people and the ethics that I love and protect with all the courage and wisdom and life I’ve collected.
‘What a gorgeous view. What a wild ride. Big shout out to my mom for all that heavy lifting and to the Loves who brought me flowers this morning. Bliss.’
