uaetodaynews.com — Aussie pet owner’s grave warning after popular toy leaves her beloved dog Zyan seriously ill – racking up a $9,000 vet bill
When Phoebe Alexander noticed her beloved dog Zyan was vomiting, she feared he might have accidentally ingested soapy water.
But she knew something wasn’t right after he failed to get better. After being advised to monitor his condition, she took him to another vet for a second opinion.
Just two hours after he had a blood test, she received a frantic call urging her to bring Zyan in for emergency surgery after they discovered a blockage in his intestines.
Much to her horror, the vet discovered a chunk of twisted rope – a popular dog toy commonly used for chewing or playing tug of war – lodged inside his body, and the surgery ended up racking up nearly $9,000.
‘I had no idea those rope toys could be so dangerous either until it happened to us,’ Phoebe told Daily Mail.
The pet owner, from Melbournesaid they didn’t own that particular toy at home so she suspected her American Bully quietly ate it at a dog park.
‘If you’ve ever bought your dog one of those rope toys, this is your sign to throw it out now… Otherwise you could end up like us,’ she said in her video.
She said it all started when Zyan began throwing up foam, which made her assume he had drank some bubble solution.

‘We thought that he might have drank some bubble solution. He was vomiting, it looked kind of foamy, so that’s what we put it down to,’ she said.
However, the vet said it was a ‘great’ sign he was vomiting up the unusual foam so the best she could do was ‘monitor and watch’ how he progressed.
‘The next day, he still wasn’t 100 per cent. We started to think maybe it wasn’t the bubble solution,’ Phoebe said.
‘The day before he had actually been to the dog park, so I said to the vet, ‘Can you lick a puddle and get sick?’
The vet didn’t give any explanation but urged Phoebe to keep monitoring him.
‘So I took him to a different vet,’ she said.
‘He was down and out and they said we can give him a nausea injection and you can go home and monitor him for a few days, or you can do blood tests and we can see if there’s anything else going on.
‘We opted for the blood test. Two hours later, I’m at home, I get the call.’

‘We were quoted $8,000 to $10,000,’ Phoebe said.
‘So glad we have pet insurance, however, you don’t know how much you’re gonna get back from pet insurance until you get given the bill.’
The total vet bill came to almost $9,000. Fortunately, Phoebe said their pet insurance covered 75 per cent of the cost, meaning she still had to fork out more than $2,000.
‘All I can say is make sure you have pet insurance for the unexpected,’ she said.
Following the successful surgery, Phoebe held up a thick chunk of the rope toy that had been removed from his body.
‘This was blocking his whole intestine – it’s massive,’ she said.
‘We don’t own any of those, so it’s definitely come from the dog park. We were at the off leash dog park – we didn’t even see him eat it.
‘But cut a long story short, if you’ve got any of those toys, get rid of them now just in case your dog eats them.’

‘Happened to a friend’s dog. He nearly died from a rope toy,’ another revealed.
‘Recently went through this – same toy! $2,000 on emergency vet, blood tests, anti nausea but thankfully he got it all up himself,’ one said.
‘Same thing happened to my golden retriever when she was one years old! Bloody rope toy. They are banned in our house now,’ another added.
‘These rope toys are dangerous. I looked after a family member’s Kelpie for a couple of weeks and she brought over these rope toys. I noticed her dog chewing and eating it so I took it off her. Luckily there was no trip to the vet,’ one shared.
‘Similar thing happened to my mother-in-law’s staffy puppy a year ago. There was a rope tied around a plastic and was going from intestines right through into his stomach and was cutting it. She was $5,000 out of pocket,’ another explained.
