I’ve packed seven, yes seven, pairs of jeans for a trip to Los Angeles and New York, proving once again that I might be the worst packer there is.

Somehow I manage to justify why everything I’m taking is essential and I have different looks that go with my favourite destinations. For example, Paris is all about great trousers, a bouclé jacket and a nice bag. London is smart tailoring, midi skirts (like the one I’m pictured wearing), sleek coats and cosy knits. LA screams denim and New York is black leather, dark knits, shearling coats and more denim.

Each pair of the seven jeans for this trip are very different (I swear). Let me tell you the ways.

• First up, see below, my dark indigo, large-cuffed jeans by Cos (I recently saw Gwyneth Paltrow in a similar pair). With heels, they’re go-out-to-dinner ready.
• Faded Levi’s 501s – you cannot set foot in LA without a pair – to be worn casually with T-shirts.
• My white, low-slung, wide-leg denims by Frame are perfect for daytime in still-relatively-warm LA.
• I’ve also packed a light-blue replica of those Frame jeans. I don’t really have an excuse for this except that they look good with a simple boxy T-shirt.
• Grey barrel-leg jeans by Agolde for New York because everyone wears black and these work well with everything black I’ve packed.
• barrel legs – my cropped dark denim ones by Cos are a must to go with the ballet flats I plan to wear walking around the city.
• And, finally, more Cos: white denim ‘jorts’ (jean shorts) I got this summer in case it’s really warm in LA.

So, there you have it – the denim trends of the past two years in one suitcase. If you’re up for a new pair and don’t fancy returning to unflattering skinnies, straight and cigarette-legs are modern alternatives – Dakota Johnson and Jennifer Lawrence are both fans. Also, for a more polished, versatile look, check out darker washes, which are a major trend this season.
