You may have secured your new coat but, according to the Met Officewe’re heading for a cold winter. So, as temperatures plummet, outerwear isn’t going to be enough. This means it’s time to build your Sherpa-inspired wardrobe, including the extra cosy bits that will work with – or without – your jacket. THE CHUNKY HIGH NECK

When the mercury dips, a thick high-neck jumper looks effortless and is brilliant for hunkering down in (and, if needed, for hiding a crepey neck). Stripes, statement stitching and faithful neutrals are all on the hotlist this season. If you feel this boxy style swamps your frame, French tuck the front hem into your trousers or jeans to accentuate your waist. Statement earrings look wonderful with a high neckline – blingy gold studs make this casual jumper party-ready.

THE LUXE THERMAL

Forget the words ‘dull’ and ‘frumpy’, this season’s thermals have had a serious glow up – and why not make the first layer you pull on a glamorous one? Leading the charge is Intimissimi with its super-soft modal and cashmere long-sleeved tops, which come in 18 elegant shades, from honey-hued beige to rich burgundy. Hanro’s wool and silk iteration is pricier, but the quality is worth the investment.

THE COSY GILET

Leave quilted puffer styles to the Young Farmers. This winter, the most stylish gilets are shearling inspired (real hide is too expensive). Think fuzzy, fleecy, faux sheepskin in neutral tones. They’re fabulous for layering under or over your coats and knits – and, even better, you can keep them on indoors, too.

You might fear these will make you look like an extra fromOliver!but at Fashion Month last February I sat beside many editors with bright woolly wrists poking out from blazer cuffs and furry jacket sleeves. And they looked (surprisingly) chic. Wearing wrist warmers is the perfect way to protect chilly hands without losing dexterity. And they are a simple way to brighten up a dark, dreary outfit.

THE WATERPROOF BOOT

The Gorpcore trend (functional, outdoor-oriented clothing with urban style) is coming for your shoe rack. While explorer-grade waterproof boots have been given the stamp of approval by the fash pack, the reason to invest is because they’re practical, comfy and keep soggy feet at bay. Handily, the ‘in’ look is also laceless – most of these boots slip on or come with zips, so they’re simple to get into. And without the lacing hooks you won’t look like you’re on a Duke of Edinburgh Award hike.
