Doctors Reveal The Truth About Wellness Retreats As Celebrity Interest Soars

These days, it seems like the hottest word in Hollywood is ‘longevity.’ Forget the saying that ‘only the good die young’ – it’s all about living as long as possible now.

The sentiment has spread like wildfire, especially after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked the ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement, one of whose main goals is to improve life expectancy.

Hollywood stars, billionaires and high-flying CEO’s are all-in on this journey too.

Bryan Johnson, founder of the company Braintree, which acquired Venmo in 2012 and sold to PayPal for $800 million in 2013, has dedicated his life to slowing down his body’s own personal aging – ‘biohacking,’ he calls it.

During season six of The Kardashians on Hulu, one of the most famous families even paid him a visit to his California home, where they tried out all of his various wellness gadgets.

Kim Kardashian admitted that she was ‘obsessed with age’ during their fascinating meeting together.

Now, you can even experience some of these things for yourself at luxury wellness retreats, which have surged in popularity recently.

All around the world, these retreats are dangling the word ‘detox’ in front of their clients, who pay thousands of dollars at the promise of getting rid of their bodies’ alleged toxins to slow down the aging process and ultimately live longer.

But like everything else, there are pros and cons that come with going on these retreats.

In July, personal trainer Melissa Revell, 35, claimed that she suffered a life-changing emotional breakdown following the ‘self-exploration’ drill at a 2019 yoga retreat in India.

She is now suing the Luton-based company which put on the course, The Yoga People International Ltd – run by British yoga guru Jamie Clarke, 59, and instructor Dulce Aguilar, 43, – for than $260,000 compensation.

And, in 2019, Kristin Chu Smart sued the Canyon Ranch spa in the Berkshires for $1 million in damages after she suffered an anaphylactic reaction to a burger, despite telling the staff at the very expensive that she had a severe nut allergy.

The burger she had eaten contained cashews, unbeknownst to her, according to The Boston Globe. It’s unclear what the result of the lawsuit was.

So are these wellness retreats really all they’re cracked up to be?

Longevity has spread like wildfire, especially after Robert F. Kennedy Jr . sparked the ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement, one of whose main goals is to improve life expectancy

Thankfully, doctors have weighed in on these wellness retreats exclusively to the Daily Mail to uncover whether or not they are really worth it.

One of the most popular wellness retreats is the We Care Spa in California, where celebrities and influencers alike flock to rest and have a total-body reset.

The spa, which is spread out on a luxury 20-acre property, is meant to detox your body and your mind through a diet of liquid nutrition, with rates ranging from $1,525 to $4,699.

All guests will follow the liquid diet to ‘give their body a break from digesting solid food,’ with the opportunity to stay for either three, six or eight days total.

In addition, each package offers multiple colonics to make sure everything is moving along smoothly, as well as infrared sauna time and ‘daily classes,’ which include yoga and water aerobics.

The upscale packages – like the eight day one – also offers what they call ‘digestive release massages.’

Some of their past clients include actresses Lisa Rinna and Liv Tyler, as well as model Molly Sims and former Real Housewives of New York star Sonja Morgan.

During the episode, they explained that the program keeps you from chewing food, and admitted that that some of the supplements they had taken kept them on the toilet, like aloe pills.

But according to New York City-based board-certified internist Dr. Michael Azizthere is no scientific evidence than any treatments at any kind of spa can detox the body.

‘There is no scientific evidence than any measures at a spa can detox the body,’ Dr. Aziz told the Daily Mail exclusively.

‘The body can detoxify by the liver, kidneys, and sweating,’ he continued. ‘The body has the ability to do that.’

The doctor explained that you cannot get rid of toxins through a diet, cleanse or any shake.

Celebrities are buying into it, too, showing off their stays at places like The Ranch in Malibu (seen), where you will stick only to a plant-forward diet

‘The term detox is often a marketing term with limited scientific evidence,’ Dr. Aziz added.

Instead, the doctor recommended that people focus on sleep and eating clean if they want to detox their body; spending time in a sauna can help too.

‘Eating clean, exercise (and) sleep helps the body to the process,’ Dr. Aziz shared.

‘A sauna can speed process to get rid of toxins versus sweating. All this can be done at home including a portable sauna. No stay in program that cost thousand of dollars is needed for that.’

We Care Spa isn’t the only program that wellness fanatics are flocking to.

Dr. Hamdan explained that at many of these spas, like Buchinger Wilhelmi, they provide medical doctors to review your progress, which can help keep you safe.

‘Do they replace your cardiologist, your general practitioner? No, they shouldn’t,’ Dr. Hamdan said.

‘Because some of these retreats are really into fasting and other modalities that can be a little bit harsh on your body, you just want to make sure you’re healthy while doing it, you’re not losing too many minerals, and you’re not in danger,’ she explained.

Dr. Hamdan viewed these retreats as a boost for your mental health instead of for your body.

‘Generally, with these spas, I would say that I see them as good for your mood and your mental health,’ Dr. Hamdan told the Daily Mail.

‘It really is a break for seven days where all you’re concentrating on is you. The most important thing that they don’t really encourage or allow you to really be on all the time is your computer and your phone.’

She said that this ‘disconnect’ from your devices is really what makes you ‘focus inward on your health’ – and provides time to think about what your purpose in life is.

‘I think that doctors, instead of poo-pooing these places, should really see them like the Europeans do, almost like a health farm, and I think that’s what they should really see them as,’ she said.

She has also attended The Ranch, a celebrity hotspot with locations in both Italy and Malibu.

As a doctor who has been to all of these spots, Dr. Hamdan said it’s very important for those who are considering a stay at a wellness retreat to ‘choose wisely.’

However, if people can’t afford these retreats, Dr. Hamdan says that there are still things you can do at home in an attempt to re-create the experience.

The doctor recommended going to your local sauna or spa, or even making your own Epsom salt bath at home.

She also suggested putting organic castor oil on your body, or trying out a hot yoga class.

At the end of he day, all that really matters is that you are unplugging and relaxing in a change from your every day life.

‘Part of the reason these spas are so regenerating for you, both mentally and physically, is because you’ve given it five to seven days,’ the doctor explained to the Daily Mail.
