A Spoonful Of Sugar? How About Five! How Dick Van Dyke Stays Sprightly Ahead Of His 100th Birthday

He made his name as the loveable and energetic dancing chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins, starring alongside Julie Andrews.

And, as he prepares to turn 100 next month on December 13, legendary American actor Dick Van Dyke shows no signs of slowing down.

‘I’m not playing a super-old any . I am a super-old’, he told The Times last week – but, witnessing his passion and energy for life, you would hardly be able to tell.

These days, the 99-year-old declines any invitations that involve travel and almost all of his socialising now takes place inside his $8million Malibu mansion in California.

However, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor remains a passionate gym-goer, still aiming to go three times a week, rewarding himself with a smoothie, a caffeine treat, or a nap afterwards for doing so.

He neither drinks, nor smokes, but has five cubes of sugar in his morning coffee each day and eats ice cream every night.

He told the newspaper, which has serialised excerpts from his latest book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: ‘I’ve made it to 99 in no small part because I have stubbornly refused to give into the bad stuff in life: failures and defeats, personal losses, loneliness and bitterness, the physical and emotional pains of ageing.’

Van Dyke also credited his youthful looks in part to his second wife, make-up artist Arlene Silver, 54, whom he married in 2012.

He added: ‘Without question, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I have not withered away into a hermetic grouch.

‘Arlene is half my age, and she makes me feel somewhere between two thirds and three quarters my age, which is still saying a lot.’

He said there have been three ingredients to keeping his life full of joy: romance, doing what he loves, and laughter – adding he and Arlene will often sing and dance their way to the kitchen together.

The actor is still part of an a capella group called the Vantastix, who have played gigs together for the past 25 years, and still does guest spots on TV, adverts and videos.

But it’s not just a positive attitude that has helped him outlast many of his peers.

The father-of-four told fellow actor Ted Danson’s podcast Where Everyone Knows Your Name in January that he goes to the gym three days a week for an hour, followed by laps of the pool and a nap.

His gym routine involves circuit of the machines, sit-up machines and the leg machines and upper body workouts.

He began: ‘Somebody said, “To what do you attribute your age and physical condition?”

“I said, “I’ve always exercised.” Three days a week, we go to the gym, still. Three days a week. And I think that’s it, why I’m not stove up like my equals.’

Ted admitted he’d seen his friend using the weight machine and doing ‘circuit training’, even dancing in between machines.

Van Dyke added: ‘I get down and do a lot of stretching and yoga-type things. Sit-ups, and they have machines, sit-up machines, something for almost every type of exercise.’

In terms of diet, the father-of-four is pretty healthy for the most part, although he does have one weakness.

Gesturing to Arlene, he told the podcast: ‘I get my coffee in bed every morning. It’s a small thing that is very important – it means a lot!’

He said he likes black coffee with no milk or creamer, but does have five cubes of sugar each time. ‘I love my sugar!’ he said.

In April, Arlene shared what she was making her husband for breakfast, consisting of two eggs and potato bread topped with butter and strawberry jam.

To drink, he had a cup of coffee made in his Keurig machine, again with five lumps of sugar.

He told the Chicago Tribune previously: ‘I watch what I eat. I’m not much on meat; maybe once a week. I have blueberries every morning. I watch my sugar level.’

He admitted: ‘I do eat ice cream every night’.

The comedian ditched any other unhealthy habits many moons ago: he has quit smoking, for example, and now chews on nicotine gum.

He’s also been open about his previous struggles with alcoholism, and how he spent three weeks in hospital receiving treatment in 1972, later giving up drinking completely.

He told Tony: It’s been 45 or 50 years. I went through a short period where I felt like I was trapped, but I went to AA and I got help right away. I went to one of those things – rehab. What took me the longest was smoking.

‘How do you do that? One a day? It’s like having one drink a day.’

Van Dyke previously shared excerpts from his 2016 memoir, My Lucky Life In And Out Of Show Business, in the Daily Mail, recalling his troubles with alcohol.

He wrote at the time: ‘Few people would have guessed. I had a problem with alcohol. In August 1972 I knew that the time had come to deal with it.

‘Somewhere along the line I progressed from being just a party drinker to where I’d run a race with Margie (his first wife) each night to see if I could get drunk before she could get dinner on the table.

‘I never saw myself as an alcoholic but I went to hospital for treatment. I was placed in the psych ward with other alcoholics and drug addicts. We were separated from those with serious emotional problems but we heard them.

‘Some were having fits and throwing up from withdrawals, others agonising through the DTs. I had no such side-effects. After three weeks I was sober for the first time in nearly 15 years.’

Van Dyke said he fell off the bandwagon ‘several times’ before losing his ‘taste’ for alcohol entirely.

‘We were making dinner one night and after taking a sip of wine, I put the glass down and said: ‘Boy, that’s making me ill.’ From then on, my desire to drink vanished,’ he said in his memoir.

Despite remaining exceptionally fit and strong for his – almost – 100 years, Van Dyke says he’s past caring about his appearance.

He told Ted’s podcast: ‘The funny thing is, you get to an age where you really don’t care how you look any . You have to keep in mind, I might get a job, so keep trimming the beard and trying to look nice.

‘A lot of people are so stiff from not moving and it’s so easy! Just get in the water.’

In his 2015 book, Keep Moving and Other Tips and Truths About Aging, Van Dyke said it is essential to not give up ‘the things you enjoy doing’.

Speaking to NPR at the time, he said: ‘The point is to enjoy. You have to pick what you enjoy doing, what fulfills you, what interests you. And I realise that’s not possible for a lot of people.”

‘As Thoreau said, a lot of people are living lives of quiet desperation. But almost anyone can find that one immersing hobby or pastime that they love to do.

‘I can’t handle the tennis court any . But I can still run and dance and sing.’

The actor has appeared in a number of films over the years such as Mary Poppins (1964) and also starred on the sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966).
