An emergency room doctor has issued a dire warning about a common household chore – especially during the holiday season.
Dr Darria Long Gillespie, a US emergency physician, cautioned that a cleaning task often attempted frequently after hosting a party or celebration can easily land people in hospital.
And it revolves around the act of hand washing wine glasses.

‘They grab the soapy sponge, they shove their hand in and they’re cleaning that bowl of the wine glass and the glass breaks.
‘And it happens so quickly that the glass – the sharp glass – cuts their arteries, cuts their nerves, cuts their tendons. Just so much damage in next to no time.’
The doctor said it was something she and other emergency medical staff encounter ‘every single year’ around the holiday period.

Dr Darria explained in a video shared to her @drdarria Instagram account how people were likely to hand wash a wine glass after hosting a party when the dishwasher is full – and explained how quickly it could result in severe cuts to the hand

‘They come in different shapes and sizes for different wine glasses too and you can really get it in there, clean it really well without endangering your hands.’
The comments section of Dr Darria’s cautionary video was filled with messages from people who had never considered the risk of a glass shattering while being hand washed – and thanked her for the suggestion of getting a wine glass brush.
There were also remarks from people who had unfortunately learned this lesson the hard way.
‘This happened to me,’ one reply confirmed. ‘Never again!’

On this, Dr Darria pointed out that while many might do this during the year, the particular circumstances of increased entertaining over the holiday season often means a full dishwasher.
She explained: ‘Often after a party, someone’s dishwasher is full and they end up deciding to just quickly hand wash a few of them.’
She added that the risk is often increased because the party host may have even had a few cheeky beverages themselves, which means they’re less careful than usual when handling glassware.
