Suplee has been candid about his weight loss journey over the years, documenting much of his experience on his American Glutton podcast, which premiered in 2020. He also opened up to People (the TV Show!) in 2022 about how his wife, Brandy Lewis, was the inspiration behind his weight loss journey.

The actor said his journey began in 2002 after seeing his now-wife for around a year.

“I became, for the first time in my life, kind of interested in the future and having experiences with her,” he said. “Like spending a day walking around a museum or going on a trip or hiking that I just wasn’t physically able to do.”

Suplee revealed that he weighed 536 lbs. at his heaviest, and said he had to go to a shipping center to be weighed on a “freight scale because back then there weren’t scales that really went that high in doctor’s offices.”

He has since lost 250 lb. — almost half his body weight.

However, the actor told PEOPLE in 2022 that he doesn’t get satisfaction from seeing a number on the scale, but rather feels a sense of accomplishment from “achieving goals.”

“I cannot say that actually losing weight has made me happier. I don’t think that’s true,” he said at the time. “I just think that achieving something I set out to achieve has given me this volume of happiness that is pretty great.”

During the premiere episode of his podcast, Suplee revealed that he started binge-eating at the age of five, and that he weighed more than 200 lbs. by age 10. He said he used food, alcohol and drugs to “numb” himself throughout his teenage years, and got sober in 2002.

Now, the actor often posts fitness tips and motivational content on Instagramand he continues to give fans a window into his health journey.

“Every man starts the same way — overwhelmed by the weight of change. You think progress will bring peace, but the mirror doesn’t lie. You lose the pounds, you see the difference, and somehow it still isn’t enough,” he wrote in an Oct. 7 Instagram post.

He continued, “Perfection creeps in disguised as progress. It tells you to go harder, cleaner, longer — until the process that once built you begins to break you. You realize you weren’t chasing health anymore; you were chasing an image that never arrives.”

“True growth isn’t perfect. It’s messy, disciplined, and painfully honest. The pursuit of perfect progress is where most men lose themselves — but where the strongest finally wake up,” he added.
