Diane Keaton talked openly about aging and cosmetic enhancements throughout her career and one thing was clear: She embraced both with open arms.
In a resurfaced 2014 interview on The Dr. Oz Showthe Annie Hall actress, who died at 79 on Oct. 11, shared her reaction to getting older.
“When I was approaching the aspect of my life where I’m growing, I started to notice when I’d look in the mirror, I saw something I didn’t want to see and that was my head. It didn’t turn out exactly I had hoped for because I was thinking of somebody more in the manner of Doris Day,” said the star, who released her book, Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Prettythat year.

Keaton also candidly shared her outlook on cosmetic enhancements. At the time, she didn’t have an answer as to why she hadn’t undergone plastic surgery but admitted to spending “a lot of time working on” tweaking her appearance.
“I’m losing hair, but I’m working on it, but I don’t think I’m going to get the transplants,” she admitted.
She grew up admiring “flawed women” who were also “independent, outspoke and insecure” but had a sense of humor. That’s to say, her definition of beauty defied purely looks.
“Beauty is honestly a feeling to me. I hate the fact that people put beauty on a pedestal and try to remove it from the ordinary experience of life but that’s all it is, it’s moment to moment,” she explained. “It’s more all encompassing, it’s not a face in the mirror all the time.”

In her 2019 interview with PEOPLE, conducted in her home in Brentwood, Calif., the Oscar winner said she never felt “pressure to” go under the knife. Still, she shared details of one enhancement she’d done following a health condition she faced in her younger years.
“I had my teeth capped. They were rotten because of the bulimia (I had in my 20s). That’s the best thing about my face — my teeth have gotten better.”
Back in 2014. the mom of two also said to AARP: “If I wanted to be prettier, fillers, Botox and a neck lift might help — but I think I’m past all that. My feelings come out in my face and show who I am inside in ways that words can’t express. In fact I’m confused by what ‘authentic’ is; am I less authentic because I wear ‘eccentric’ clothes and hats? No. I look at my contemporaries who have had ‘good work’ done; are they less authentic? No! And neither are the women who’ve had procedures that went awry.”
She even joked that her famous love of hats was all in vain. “I usually wear berets or bowlers to hide my Spock ears and thinning hair. I’ve let the dyed blond grow out to gray, and I like it. All I want is no alopecia, no female-pattern baldness and enough hair to last a lifetime.”
During her life, Keaton used her platform as a L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador to give women like her a chance to be seen. When she stepped into the role in 2006, she touted the company’s Age Perfect Pro-Calcium skincare line, the first targeting women aged 60 and older, per WWD.
