Elizabeth Olsen has been slammed online over her shocking Hollywood demand.

The actress, 36, recently revealed that she will only make movies that will premiere in a theater rather than on a streaming service – and it has not gone over well with fans.

While speaking with InStyle recently, she said she will not sign onto any film that doesn’t have a theatrical release planned.

‘If a movie is made independently and only sells to a streamer, then fine. But I don’t want to make something where that’s the end-all,’ she said.

‘I think it’s important for people to gather as a community, to see other humans, be together in a space.

‘That’s why I like sports. I think it’s really powerful for people to come together for something that they’re excited about.’

Her comment sparked a fierce debate on X, formerly Twitter, and many users were quick to criticize Olsen.

They pointed out that one of the biggest titles of her career was a show that streamed exclusively on Disney+ – WandaVision.

The actress also appeared in the Netflix films Kodachrome in 2017 and His Three Daughters in 2023.

‘How refreshing to hear an A-lister champion the sanctity of the theatrical experience from atop a mountain of Marvel money, a platform built by the very franchise model that gutted mid-budget cinema,’ one person scathed.

‘This curated nostalgia for community feels like a luxury only those insulated from the industry’s economic realities can afford to preach.

‘Translation: I need more money and streaming isn’t paying enough,’ added another.

‘Does WandaVision mean nothing to you?’ asked someone else.

‘Sounds like she only cares about her paycheck. Makes sense, as I have no idea what she’s ever done that was good,’ read a fourth tweet.

‘Nah, I can wait a few months and watch it on my 65-inch OLED at the foot of my bed without some loudmouths and people on their phones. That’s not the kind of “getting together” I need,’ a fifth said.

On the other hand, some users agreed that seeing a movie in theaters is important, and praised Olsen for defending cinemas.

Someone else wrote, ‘Completely appreciate her view on this. I find movies to be much more enjoyable and memorable with other people who you don’t even know but find the experience together to be enjoyable.’

‘I respect the hell out of this. actors need to adopt this philosophy AND be public about it,’ penned a different user.

‘The streaming model is toxic and harmful to the industry and to the audience/consumers. It needs to be stopped in its tracks and the industry needs to course correct.’
