One of my favourite terms being bandied around social media is ‘old-money style’, which basically means you dress like you come from a vast amount of generational wealth and ride around your country estate wearing Hermes or Ralph Lauren.

Old-money style is a timeless aesthetic, featuring carefully chosen wardrobe pieces that champion quality over quantity: think well-tailored looks and natural fabrics. It avoids flashy trends and prominent logos, favouring a neutral palette and sleek cuts.

While not everyone has a rich family, that doesn’t mean you can’t introduce a little old-money style to your wardrobe. Here are five easy ways to get the look – and make everyone wonder whether a rich auntie really did leave you something in her will.

Heritage heroes This autumn sees the return of checks, tweed and pleats – all heritage details full of old-money vibes. I’m loving the check blazers and trousers at Polo Ralph Lauren online at John LewisWeekend Max Mara and House of Dagmar.

A one-tone outfit Nothing feels more polished than dressing in one sleek shade. To pull off this look I like to pair a chocolate brown knit with the same colour trousers or skirt, together with black knee-high boots and gold jewellery. Almada Label, Sézane and Cos all have stylish options to create this aesthetic.

Sharp tailoring A trouser suit or wide-leg trousers, worn with a shirt and belt, is a surefire way of looking sophisticated. Me+Em and newbie brand This Me have some great pieces. A bouclé jacket (like the one I’m pictured wearing) with jeans is also a strong contender. Or choose a shirtdress and ballet flats.

Luxe materials Invest in quality fabrics like leather and suede. Joseph has beautiful nappa leather trousers and skirts and some soft stylish cashmere, all of which scream old money.

A cover-up star A winter coat in charcoal grey or navy says rich without being expensive.

And lastly, some polish Well-maintained nails are a must, and sleekly done hair – a professional blow-dry is an easy way to look pulled together even if your work and family balance is chaotic.

ROLL WITH IT

When it comes to warm basics for the cold weather, nobody does it better than Uniqlo. This wine-coloured merino-wool rollneck ticks all the boxes. Check out the brand’s just-dropped collaboration with JW Anderson, too.

DROP SHOT

This beautiful Cinder Drop necklace by Otiumberg is on my Christmas wish list. Perfect for layering with shirts and over knitted dresses.

SPOTTED

A favourite actress of mine who always oozes sophistication is Tilda Swinton. Here she is at the recent London Film Festival rocking a tailored look in Chanel by Matthieu Blazy.
