Have you heard of 886? Consider this the heritage jewellery brand you need to have on your radar this festive sparkly season.

Designed by The Royal Mint (the official maker of UK coins) and worn by the likes of actors Cate Blanchett and James Norton, Vivienne Westwood’s granddaughter, Cora Corre, and the singer, Olivia Dean, its delicate pieces have fast become a staple on the red carpet.

‘886’ cleverly refers to the year The Royal Mint was founded and encapsulates the maker’s 1,100 years worth of expertise in the realm of precious metals.

Whilst most metal jewellery is typically cast, 886 produces pieces that are ‘struck’, meaning they are compressed like coins, which results in denser, non-porous and more durable metal with a special high quality shine.

‘The 886 collection began with the idea of an institutional gold bullion,’ says creative director Dominic Jones, the five-time BFC Newgen winner who is known for his sculptural and contemporary designs.

‘I wanted to celebrate the inherent beauty of precious metal and now we have started adding stones. But each design continues to be very brave in its simplicity.’

Sustainability is also at the heart of this coin maker turned jewellery house. The pieces are made on site in Llantrisant, South Wales, where The Royal Mint has invested in a new patented chemical process to recover gold from e-waste mobile phones and computers.

Its latest launch is particularly beautiful. The Teardrop collection is made to be handed down between generations – with a clean conscience – and is designed specially with budding brides in mind.

The eternity ring interlaced with sustainably sourced lab grown diamonds would make the perfect wedding band. Or for extra glitter on the big day, see the matching hoop earrings.

Or for something simpler the 18ct yellow gold studs would make for a lovely finishing touch or would work nicely as part of your everyday ear stack. Whatever you choose, it’s a worthy investment, but move quickly as these lab grown diamonds are flying fast!
