Barack Obama tried to politely call out his daughters’ revealing clothing while he was president, although, he was often told to back down by his wife Michelle.

In a new interview about her fashion evolution, the former first lady revealed what life was like during the family’s time in the White House throughout Barack’s two terms as the 44th president from 2009 to 2017.

The couple’s two daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24, were just eight and 10 when they were thrust into the limelight and parents Barack and Michelle had to make sure they were dressed appropriately for public outings.

In a new interview, Michelle said the preteens had to be professionally styled when they had to step out for appearances.

However, when they were away from the limelight, Malia and Sasha were allowed to make their own fashion choices – which sometimes sparked a reaction from Barack.

Speaking to Peopleshe said: ‘So we had a deal – “You work with (my stylist) Meredith (Koop) when dressing for public events.”

‘What’s “in” for a 13-year-old is not acceptable walking down the staircase of Air Force One.

‘It was like, “When you’re with us, you’re like me, you’re on a job. And so your choices can’t lead, but you can be a part of the process.”

‘Meredith worked with them and she had those (fashion) fights. But in their own world it was all them.’

Michelle then revealed her husband sometimes had a hard time with his daughter’s outfits.

‘Barack would be like, “Those shorts seem really short.” And I was like, “Don’t say anything. Let them cook,”‘ she added.

In the same interview, Michelle lifted the lid on her date nights with Barack, revealing that the pair avoid talking to each other for the day so that they have things to chat about later that evening.

Shedding light on how they keep their romance alive, Michelle said that they prefer to keep things low-key and casual – and bookmark conversations to have later.

‘When we’re both happy about date night, we’re at home. We are not getting dressed. We just have a nice dinner, candles lit, music, we talk,’ Michelle said.

‘We don’t talk for the whole day, because we’re in the house together all day, right? We work from home.

‘So, when we are going to have a really special night, it’s like, ‘Don’t talk to me. Save it for dinner.’

‘He’ll be like, “Did you talk to the girls?” (I’d be like), “I did, but we’re not going to talk about it until date night.”‘

When the couple do decide to step out for a special evening together, they usually either go for dinner or to the cinema – but never both, Michelle shared.

She added: ‘But sometimes we go out for dinners in D.C. or wherever. I am too old, I can’t do dinner and a movie. I will fall asleep in the movie. So it’s like, ‘Let’s pick one.”

Michelle and Barack, 64, tied the knot in 1992 and have been married for 33 years.
