A Catastrophic Refereeing Error.. Controversy Over Real Madrid’s Penalty Kick Against Levante (video)

Real Madrid defeated its guest Levante (2-0) in their match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, in the twenty-second round of the Spanish Football League.

French striker Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the fifty-eighth minute from a penalty kick he earned himself.

The penalty kick won by Mbappe in the 57th minute sparked a major arbitration controversy and different reactions between those who considered the referee Espinosa’s decision correct and those who saw that he committed a catastrophic mistake.

According to the “Archiveo VAR” account, the video assistant technology (VAR) did not specify its position and did not call the referee for verification, but rather disavowed its responsibility in the match between Real Madrid and Levante.

He added: “Mbappe had already passed Levante defender Deila before the latter touched him, but he fell before touching, and this means that the process did not require announcing the penalty kick.”

The (ArchivoVAR) account revealed that Mbappe began to fall and collapse before any actual contact with the defender occurred, which means that the subsequent contact had no connection to the process and therefore the referee had to signal the continuation of play.
