John McNeil specifically pointed to the technology of reusing parts, as this approach is applied in the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric cars.

He explained, “American automakers were inspired by this idea from their Chinese counterparts, who have been using similar technologies for a long time. For example, identical batteries, heat pumps, seat motors, and windshield wiper motors can be reinstalled in different models of electric cars.”

“It’s a very clever approach because the wiper motor doesn’t really change or add anything to the experience,” McNeil said.

He added, “One of the most important lessons that Tesla has learned from its Chinese counterparts is the maximum similarity in parts between different models. For example, the Model 3 and Model Y share up to 75% of their components, which speeds up the assembly process and significantly reduces its cost.”

He stressed, “This approach allows for faster production of new cars and flexible responses to demand, and Elon Musk has repeatedly explained that this great similarity is the key to the success of mass production.”

He stated that comprehensive component standardization is not just a tactic, but a vital strategy for fast-growing emerging automakers to achieve scalability and maintain competitive prices.

He also pointed out that the modern automobile industry is moving towards the maximum standardization of internal components without compromising the quality and specificity of the models, and Chinese manufacturers are setting the pace, while leading international companies, such as Tesla, are closely monitoring their decisions and applying best practices.

It is noteworthy that McNeil served as President of Global Sales and Marketing at Tesla from 2015 to 2018 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of General Motors.
