The Chinese company BYD has introduced a new technology for charging electric vehicles. The new platform is capable of delivering peak charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts. Now it takes no time than filling a car with gasoline.

Po words BYD founder Wang Chuanfu, this technology will provide a range of 400 kilometers in just five minutes of charging. The first models to have access to ultra-fast charging will be the new Han L sedan and Tang L SUV.

To support the new technology, BYD announced for the first time the large-scale construction of its own charging network. The company plans to create than 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations throughout China.

The company did not give specific deadlines for implementation and the amount of investment in this large-scale project. In the meantime, BYD car owners depend on the infrastructure of other market participants—competitor networks or public charging stations—for charging.

The “charging race” has been going on in the Chinese market for several years now. Tesla has been developing its Supercharger network since 2014, and local competitors Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng and Zeekr are also investing heavily in their stations. Fast charging technology is considered key to the mass transition to electric vehicles, as it reduces downtime on the road.
