Samsung Shifts Gaming Hubs Focus Toward Social And Discovery Tools

Recently, Google Play Games has attempted to bring gamers together with its community features and the ability to synchronize achievements to the cloud so that they’re available across devices. Now, Samsung wants to add similar features to help Galaxy owners track and compare their achievements, as it rolls out a slightly redesigned Gaming Hub app geared towards discovery, video content, and socials.
Samsung’s Gaming Hub gets an upgrade
According to Samsung, its Gaming Hub app has than 160 million monthly users and is a major factor in Samsung’s decision to update the app to make it easier for users to find and download games. The tech giant says the new discovery recommendations include “organic” and “personalized” suggestions based on titles users have already played on their devices. However, these suggestions are expected to change based on the games users spend time with, though it is unclear how often they are updated.
All titles listed in the Galaxy app store are now available for download from within the Gaming Hub app. Samsung says it wants its app to be the “central destination” for finding games on its devices, so it’ll be interesting to see what Google has to say about it, if anything.
Players will be able to gain insights from video content readily available in the app. The update adds video content featuring gameplay, guides, and media from both streamers and content creators, based on the games played. It’s unclear right now if creators have signed endorsement deals with Samsung, or if there is another method for sourcing the content.
The latest update is already rolling out to the majority of Samsung devices, and it is believed to coincide with the recent Samsung update that removed the Creature Collection mini game. Samsung says future updates will continue to include community-driven features such as customization options, better game discovery, and relevant video content.
I has been revealed that Samsung’s next generation of devices might not see many upgrades, so I’m a little curious about why Samsung is leaning hard towards its own Gaming Hub service while pushing for app usage without upgraded hardware.
