Sigh. Why is it women who are always the most judgemental?

This is why the unkind chatter I’ve heard about the pictures of Jackie O at Clovelly Beach over the weekend has felt so pointedly familiar. The word going around group chats is that – shocker of shockers – she appears a touch different from her Instagram photos.

Personally, I had to squint ten times to spot a single flaw. And Jackie – if you’re reading this – you looked every bit Ursula Andress stepping out of the surf in that white swimsuit.

I know all too well what it’s like to have your body examined under the microscope, to read the mean comments and, worse, be told of real-life conversations among those you had considered friendly acquaintances.

There’s a rule I live by when it comes to candid photos: if you were to be photographed without your knowledge – no posing, no preening – would you look any better? If the answer is no, hold your tongue.

I’ll start with Jackie’s skin. It’s bronzed and, yes, perhaps a little sun-damaged. But she’s a Gold Coast girl who’s spent decades living in Sydney. Does anyone really expect her to have the pallid complexion of a sickly, scurvy-riddled Edwardian child? Please.

And does she have some wrinkles? Sure. If you zoom in close enough, we all bloody do.

My theory is that a lot of the snark boils down to envy – especially in Jackie’s case. Since her divorce, she’s dated younger men, a choice that reliably triggers eye-rolls from women quick to judge while secretly wishing they could do the same.

It’s no secret that one of her recent partners was Bondi DJ and pilot Richie Ryan – a man I (briefly) had my eye on since we went to the same gym.

Now, if I can get over that disappointment, surely the venomous keyboard warriors can show a little grace, too.

So, to the trolls and Tattlers, my New Year’s message is this: put a sock in it.

There’s enough real gossip to go around without resorting to toxic chatter about other women’s bodies. It’s cheap, and it’s not on.

Sure, there’s room for debatesometimes– like those disingenuous stars who swear their shrinking frames are thanks to daily walks and green juice, when we all know what’s really going on. I’ll happily skewer that any day of the week.

But a 50-year-old single mum enjoying a day at the beach? Zip it.

I’m old enough to remember the days when rating and mocking women’s figures was par for the course, and we were simply expected to cop it.

Those magazines are long gone, but they live on in the group chats of private school mums and websites like Tattle. Yes, these forums can play a role in exposing grifters and liars among the so-called influencer class – but much of the commentary is simply body-shaming bile from womenwho, frankly, are jealous.

They should know better: our wrinkles aren’t shameful, ageing doesn’t need public approval, and yes, it’s perfectly normal for knees to lose collagen and elastin as we age. They aren’t ‘gross’. They’reknees.

When public vitriol is levelled at a woman simply for ageing, I remember my former life as an escort agency owner.

One of my most sought-after escorts was 67. She’d never touched Botox or surgery. She looked incredible – though, of course, there were grey hairs and crinkled knees.

So, to those who treat judging their own sex as a sport, here are my final words for you: trolling someone’s body won’t make you younger, fitter or better looking.

In fact, the ones most obsessed with policing bodies tend to be the ugliest of all – and no amount of Botox can smooth out bitterness and jealousy.
