Millennials Left Outraged As Gen Z Boycott Yet Another Beloved Fashion Item
They are iconic shades worn by celebrities such as James Dean, The Beatlesand Bob Dylan – but Gen Z has now declared that Wayfarer sunglasses are officially ‘out.’
The classic Ray-Ban frame is a staple in many wardrobes, characterized by a distinctive trapezoidal shape that flare out at the top corners and a horizontal top bar on the nose.
While many don’t think twice before slipping on a pair, a new TikTok video has alerted Wayfarer-loving folks that Gen Z are branding their beloved item as unfashionable.
‘I’ve seen some TikToks making fun of millennials for still wearing Wayfarers,’ content creator Adam Wilson declared in a clip he shared online while wearing the famous frames.

‘And it’s like, they came for our ankle socks, fine. They came for our skinny jeansfine. But I think this is where we take a stand. I am not prepared to go out and buy rainbow Oakleys,’ he said passionately of the rival glasses maker.
Gen Z tends to favor Y2K style glasses, often donning slim oval frames as seen in the early 2000s instead of the Wayfarer.
But irate social media users responded to Wilson’s video, agreeing that the frames are popular for a reason.
‘Wayfarers have been classic for like 70 years so disrespectfully Gen Z take a seat. Why are they so obsessed with simultaneously reinventing everything and shaming everyone?’ one user responded.

‘I will never take fashion advice from Gen Z. They look crazy,’ declared someone else.
‘I mean they make way cooler glasses with a different frame shapes, square, circle – whatever. The Wayfarers frame shape is boring and has been since like 2012,’ another wrote, defending the Gen Z stance.
Style expert Liz Teich has since spoken to Daily Mail, agreeing that she ‘draws the line’ at declaring that a timeless sunglasses style is out of fashion.

‘I think that Gen Z hasn’t been alive long enough to know much about this iconic sunglasses style,’ she suggested.
Teich, who runs The New York Stylist, pointed out that icons like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, JFK, Tom Cruise and Kate Moss all made this sunglasses style look effortlessly cool and classic – for a reason.
‘There have been so many sunglasses trends over the years, but the Wayfarer always seems to stand the test of time, reemerging every decade,’ she pointed out. ‘While it’s not currently a trend with sunglasses, I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s “out.”‘
‘Gen Z is deviating from older fashionistas who seem to crave timeless, perennial and quiet luxury styles,’ the style expert continued.

She joked: ‘We’re seeing futuristic styles and many of us (like this elder Millennial) just cannot go back to anything that resembles the Oakleys and wrap-around shield 90’s sunglasses from back in the day.’

Teich pointed out there is also a practical element to Wayfarer sunglasses which some of the current trends don’t provide: basic sun protection.
‘(Gen Z are) also wearing non-tinted sunglasses,’ she shared. ‘There are also colored lenses popping up as well.

‘They still protect your eyes from UV, but they are something that you don’t have to take off when you’re inside or are on your phone, which is maybe why it’s appealing to this generation,’ she added.
Teich explained that sunglasses are a timeless accessory because they not only show your personality, but they can look dramatic and become the signature of an outfit and are also functional.
For those in the market for a new pair of shades, the stylist said she’s noticed a lot of ‘retro styles’ like oversized aviators, oval shapes and cat eye styles coming back into rotation.
‘These styles can add personality, but not feel overly trendy or of an era the way the tiny Y2K sunglasses were feeling,’ she suggested.

Teich reminded people it’s important to wear what suits your face shape, rather than being dictated by trends.
Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer was introduced in 1952 and immediately rose to popularity, often seen on music and film icons.
