When it comes to make-up, a clever technique can be just as transformative as a new product – and with party season fast approaching, there’s no better time to refresh your routine.

TikTok is brimming with smart hacks designed to lift, smooth and sculpt, particularly for mature skin. From a contour trick dubbed ‘the best facelift for over-50s’ to an eyeliner method that gives eyes an instant lift, here are three popular techniques that prove it’s all about placement, not product.

The contour facelift

Shared by make-up guru Lori Marschhauser in a clip with over a million views, this simple contour method is dubbed the ‘best facelift for over 50s’. You’ll need a concealer, bronzer, blusher and a flat utensil to help with placement.

To start, take a straight beauty utensil or product – the ‘stick’ end of a make-up brush or an eyeliner pencil works well – and place it diagonally from the corner of your eye to the corner of your lip. Then, take either a brush dipped in concealer or a concealer stick, and draw a straight line on the inner edge of where your straight utensil is lying (so you end up with a line of concealer from your outer eye to outer lip).

Next, move your straight utensil so it’s connecting your outer nostril and your upper ear, before using its placement to draw a line of concealer above the utensil (connecting your outer nostril and upper ear).

Then take a brush or blush stick, and draw a smidge of blush from where the lines intersect to your upper ear (so directly above the upper left segment of concealer). Do the same with bronzer on the lower edge of the same concealer line (you’ll end up with a tricolour of red, cream and brown on your cheek if you’ve done this correctly).

The final step is to gently blend and buff with either a beauty blender or fluffy brush. You’ll end up with a beautiful contour that isn’t too heavy, and lifts your face rather than pulling it across.

The liner eyelift

Anyone interested in make-up knows Erica Taylor (@ericataylor2347). She has than a million followers on Instagram, two million on TikTok and is part of the L’Oréal Paris League of Experts. And we think her tip for applying eyeliner to mature skin might just be the best we’ve seen online. You’ll need an eyeliner pencil (we love a smoky brown) and a liquid eyeliner with a fine tip.

To start with, Taylor explains why applying waterproof liner to mature skin is tricky. Our eyelids slightly wrinkle as we age, and because of that, there’s not a tightness at the outer corner of the eye. So waterproof liner often doesn’t look tight and ‘snatched’, but a bit droopy and smudgy.

To counteract this, you want to take a thin-tipped pencil – Taylor uses the £7.99 L’Oréal Infallible Pencil – and gently apply it to the upper lid, right at the base of the lashes. Apply all the way to the eye’s outer edge, until you get to the place where your lid starts to droop.

At this point, you want to look straight in the mirror and instead of following the lid downwards, let the eyeliner come away from the eye and lift upwards. The key is not to go in too heavy-handedly and try an Amy Winehouse-esque flick: just half a centimetre or so of a slightly lifted line.

You can then take a small brush and slightly smudge the liner for a softer effect, and so the lift from your eyelid doesn’t look as dramatic. If you want to make slightly of a statement (perfect for party season), apply a lick of very thin waterproof liner over the top. Apply a tiny bit liner to connect the pencil liner to the inner eye, et voilà: a temporary eyelift.

The smooth statement lip

The final hack comes from mature beauty expert Camille Cowher (@camillecowher), who’s racked up than two million likes on her tutorials. In her most-watched clip of last year, she shares her sneaky hack to avoid the dreaded smudge-effect that happens when applying lippy to mature lips. You’ll need a good clear lip liner and your favourite shade of lipstick.

The first step is to take the clear liner and sketch it around your lips (it’s clear, so you don’t have to worry about being too precise). Focus on the outer creases or any slightly textured areas, before giving it a good rub in with your fingertip.

What this is actually doing is creating an invisible barrier so your lipstick doesn’t seep into any creases around your mouth. If you then add lipstick on top, it should stay perfectly in place and stop any slight smudging as the evening wears on.

Finally, top with a good lip gloss, which will smooth over any grabbing or feathering in the creases of your lips. You’re all set to rock a statement red pout all night – and won’t need to keep checking your phone in case you’ve gone full Joker.
