Now it’s November, the festive events are beginning to pile up. Before you know it you’ll be ticking off pre-Christmas lunches with everyone you won’t see on the big day itself (including the in-laws, your granny and seven of your cousins).

Then it snowballs into the annual work party, boozy brunches, nights out at the theatre, endless dinner plans and back-to-back occasions where you might require a vaguely spangly outfit. And that’s all before we get to NYE.

If the thought of ‘party dressing’ makes you shiver, don’t fret! The jeans-and-a-nice-top outfit combination is still very much approved by the fashion pack. As is relaxed, slouchy partywear, rather than skin tight attire. So there’s no need to go bare limbed – especially bare armed – or dress head-to-toe in sequins unless you feel like it.

The High Street’s take on cocktail attire is often shiny, yet skimpy, with a lack of sleeves. If your arms are an area of your body that you’d rather keep covered, then read on for the long-sleeved style solutions to try if you want to keep them under wraps this winter.

Bardot necklines

Loved by stylists as one of the most flattering necklines, consider a bardot cut top your new best friend. The shape is far elevated than a simple scoop or V-neck, making it perfect for dinners where the top half of your body becomes a real focal point. It reveals just the right amount of your clavicle before stopping just below the shoulder. To put it simply, it’s sexy and flirty, without being over the top. And it also gives you a good amount of skin to play with when it comes to throwing on a statement necklace or adding in some blingy earrings.

The new Christmas jumper

Forget frumpy knits with bells sewn on and Fair Isle cardis (which look fab in the daytime, but fall flat at cocktail hour). The new Christmas jumper is far chicer than that; its embellished, but not embarrassing; colourful, but not cringey. And it most definitely doesn’t make any noise! This season’s pick come with feathered sleeves, bedazzled collars or are covered with metal studs, in muted tones that will pair with the rest of your wardrobe. It’s the simple way to keep cosy, yet party ready.

Bodysuits

I like to think of these as an extra thermal layer, because they tuck right down your back and into your jeans or trousers. Opt for a printed one – yes, leopard print is festive. Or try Reiss’ rhinestone iteration in one of this season’s hottest shades, oxblood red. Intimissimi is a master when it comes to form fitting designs. I have many of its bodysuits because they wash wonderfully and don’t lose their shape. This shimmering lurex effect style will look lovely under twinkling tree lights.

The evening shirt

I’m not talking about your office-appropriate crisp white poplin number. A soirée shirt should be slinky silk or satin, bold metallic or embellished with beads or sequins. I love With Nothing Underneath’s festive crimson take. Or try Mango’s scatter beaded burnt orange style. I’ll be tucking mine into a wool pencil skirt with knee high boots or simple tailored trousers and heeled mules. And the best bit? No arms or elbows in sight. Note that you can also wear these shirts to the office – but you will risk garnering compliments by the printer.

Blazers

Of course you can throw these over whatever top or knit you desire, but the party trick this season is to wear yours as a top (rather than a jacket) and forgo the layer underneath. Don’t pick a design that’s too tight. Instead look for styles with enough coverage across your bust, so that you don’t risk a bra exposing accident. By Malina’s champagne-coloured iteration is to die for. The shoulder pads and nipped in waist will supply you with all the curves you might not have. If you prefer a plain black version, F&F’s double breasted blazer with fabulous labels and piped pockets will serve you well – and it’s less than £40.

Graphic tee

When all else fails, and you’re tired of dressing up on repeat, you can’t go wrong with a baggy graphic t-shirt. You’ll only have your forearms and elegant wrists on show here. Just throw on your smartest black trousers, some tailored wide-leg jeans or even a pair of leather pants and French tuck the t-shirt into your waistband. Accessories are key to making this look party-ready, so dig out a statement belt, a chain necklace and a pair of big earrings. It’s effortless and elevated. And whatever phrase or picture you have emblazoned on your chest, it will be a great conversation starter. One of my favourites this year comes from Michael Kors. Its Watch Hunger Stop design, featuring photographs by Maxime Poiblanc of fruits and vegetables grown by WFP’s Home-Grown School Feeding beneficiaries in Sri Lanka, is part of the brand’s initiative to fight global hunger. All profits from the sale of the T-shirt go to the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Stylish and serving a worthy cause. What’s not to love?
