- Now, she’s wondering if she’s in the wrong for setting her boundary
A woman turned to the Reddit community for support following a painful standoff with her father and stepmother over the holidays.
She explained in her post that she had spent years feeling pressured to replace the mother she lost at age 5 and was finally setting boundaries by refusing to visit for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

She shared that her mother had died from mental illness, writing, “I’ll leave you to figure out what that means,” and said she was only 7 when her dad began dating a woman named Diane. She recalled never forming a strong connection with her, explaining that even as a child she “didn’t see her as my new mom.”

As she grew older, she remained firm in the belief that she had “one mom and one dad and I don’t want another mom or dad.” She said this wasn’t a problem until she reached her mid-teens, when her dad and stepmother began insisting she start calling Diane “mom.”
According to her post, her dad and Diane regularly sat her down for what they called calm discussions. They often told her why it “wasn’t fair for Diane to not be loved and fully appreciated,” and they tried to convince her that she owed Diane than she felt.

“She said after mom did what she did I should have appreciated someone who stayed raised me with dad and stuck out all the rough parts,” OP wrote. “She said she had believed deep down I loved her but that even when something shitty happened to me, which was me losing someone REALLY important to me, I still never turned to Diane and I still didn’t seem to appreciate that she could be dead tomorrow.”
“She said she loved me with all her heart and in her eyes I was her daughter but I didn’t even see her as a beloved stepmother, let alone the mom she felt like she had earned the title of,” she continued.
Her dad insisted she “needed a mom” and claimed she didn’t have “the right viewpoint” to understand what she was missing.
Diane reacted emotionally to that moment, telling her that her certainty “hurt her because she deserved love and consideration.” The repeated pressure continued, and the young woman said, “That stuff never stopped while I lived at home.”

Once she graduated, she moved out and lived with her grandparents before heading to college. As the holidays approached, those grandparents invited her home, and she planned to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with them instead.
Her father, however, “hated it” and insisted she return to his home for the holidays to be “with my family.”
“He said I need to come back and be with my family. I asked if they’d lay off me about Diane and dad said that would still need to be talked about,” OP continued.

She immediately declined the invitation, saying she was “not going back to his house just to fight with them.” Diane later called her and asked if staying away was her “way of saying you still don’t feel different,” and questioned whether months apart made her miss her stepmother at all.

When she answered that her feelings were unchanged, Diane cried, ended the call, and later texted her saying they “have stuff to talk about” and she needed to be with them for the holidays. But the young woman stood by her decision and told her father she would not be coming.
The Reddit community supported her decision, with one commenter saying, “Diane is being massively selfish and self-centered, but your dad is much worse for not only allowing her to harass you but also to fully support and participate in it. He should be putting you and your feelings first and he clearly is not.”

“Your mother was a human being, not some interchangeable piece. She was not replaceable,” another wrote.
