Cookie Dough Recall In 15 States Classified As Highest Risk Level Heres What We Know

NEED TO KNOW

  • Hudson River Foods Corp. initiated a recall on Nov. 11 due to potential Salmonella contamination
  • The recall has since been classified as a Class 1 risk to consumers, the highest risk level that can lead to serious health issues
  • Consumers with contaminated products are encouraged to dispose of it immediately

An edible chocolate-chip cookie dough sold under the Doughy brand has been recalled after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) flagged a potential Salmonella risk.

According to an Enforcement report initiated on Tuesday, Nov. 11 and classified on Dec. 5, the agency has labeled the risk of the recall a Class I, its highest tier, indicating a reasonable probability that eating the product could lead to serious health consequences.

The recall, initiated by parent company Hudson River Foods Corp., covers 113 tubs of Doughy chocolate-chip cookie dough, each sold in 12-ounce containers. The affected products carry a “Best By/Expiration Date” of July 4, 2026, and were shipped to customers in 15 states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas.

PEOPLE reached out to Doughy and Hudson River Foods Corp. for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

No illnesses have been reported, and the manufacturer has not yet released a public statement. Still, federal officials emphasized that Salmonella remains one of the most common causes of food-borne illness in the U.S. The CDC estimates it causes 1.35 million infections each year. Symptoms — which often include stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea or vomiting — typically begin within hours to days after exposure and last four to seven days.

While most people recover without treatment, the infection can be dangerous for certain groups. Young children, adults over 65, people with weakened immune systems and adults over 50 with underlying conditions can face severe complications and may require hospitalization.

“Most people with Salmonella infection have watery diarrhea that might have blood or mucus, stomach cramps that can be severe,” the CDC explains, adding that some may also experience headache, vomiting or loss of appetite.

The FDA’s three-tier classification system helps consumers understand the urgency of a recall. A Class I designation — the same level used here — is reserved for situations where exposure poses a significant health risk. Class II recalls signal temporary or medically reversible health effects, while Class III recalls address low-risk issues that are unlikely to cause harm.

Consumers who have the recalled Doughy cookie dough at home are advised not to eat it and to discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase. Officials say they will continue monitoring for any reported illnesses linked to the product.
