Body Language Expert Says Olivia Rodrigo And Louis Partridges Last Outing Before Split Seemed Performative

Olivia Rodrigo may have masked her crumbling relationship with a stoic smile during her last public outing with her ex-boyfriend Louis Partridge, a body language expert has claimed.

It was reported over the weekend that singer Rodrigo, 22, and the British actor, 22, quietly ended their relationship weeks ago after than two years together.

For many fans the breakup came as a huge surprise, but body language expert Gamble James has suggested there might have been subtle clues that hinted their relationship was coming to an end.

She even claimed to the Daily Mail that the duo might have been putting on a united front and playing up to the cameras as they approached the end of their romance.

One of Rodrigo and Partridge’s last public outings together included a date night on October 12.

For the occasion, the former lovebirds headed to Halloween Horror nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and were seen holding hands and looking cozy.

‘Their Halloween appearance would suggest that Olivia, in particular, thought she was still in possession of a relationship worth investing in,’ James told the Daily Mail after analyzing the photos.

‘Louis had dropped his signature old school, aristocratic charm for a casual look and there was a reasonably congruent fit in terms of their body language set-pieces.’

James observed that Rodrigo and Partridge were doing ‘playful’ poses together, which she said tends to normally indicate a very close and loving relationship.

‘It requires like-minded synchronicity, and it needs mutual engagement to look authentic,’ she explained.

‘Looking playful when you’re about to exit from a relationship is a tough call as it requires attention to your entire body movement as well as your facial expressions.’

James admitted that while their body language was ‘quite complex,’ it ‘fit the narrative of being young and in love.’

‘One pose is clearly performative with the mock-fear signals of hunched shoulders, pointing and her fingers held to her mouth, but their inner and less visible – so therefore less performative – hands are clasped and Louis has his knee bent inward so his leg is held across Olivia’s body in a gesture that would normally suggest an exclusive and tactile relationship,’ she added.

‘There is the cute clutching of Louis’s thumb in a sweet and slightly infantile gesture as they ride the escalator together and the way he happily “donates” his thumb for the purpose and the loving, confident smile on her face suggests a romantic relationship here.

‘When they stand together engaging in eye contact Louis cups Olivia’s hand in both of his as she rests one hand on his shoulder in a gesture of ownership, laughing in delight as she gets his undivided attention.’

But James said Rodrigo and Partridge’s body language told a very different story weeks later during their last public appearance as a couple at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on November 8.

During the event, which saw Rodrigo perform a White Stripes cover, the couple seemed ‘ rigid and less relaxed,’ James said.

‘Their facial expressions seem to define diverse stages of emotional involvement as a couple,’ she James.

‘Louis looks very camera-obsessed here, pinning the camera with a meaningful; one-brow-raised stare that is quite intense despite the dimpled mouth smile.

‘It looks like a sardonic, slightly seductive smile rather than a relaxed and loving one and the lazy eyed “seduction” looks aimed at the camera rather than Olivia.

James deduced that Rodrigo looked much loved up than Partridge did, suggesting ‘she might not have been aware of any split making its way along the horizon, if that’s what has happened.’

‘Her torso is turned towards Louis, and her neck is bared, suggesting trust and possible devotion,’ James continued.

‘Her head tilt and her side-eye glance at the camera suggest a “knowing” look, as though showing her relationship off to the camera.’

But James suggested that Rodrigo’s pose might easily have been a ‘performance’ in a bid to ‘make her appear OK to bluff the press.’

She continued: ‘A short trawl through her most recent archives shows that this pose she is pulling with Louis is almost identical to the pose she did with Lily Allen after the alleged split.

‘This suggests this pose, rather than being one of authentic happiness, could be her fall-back, masked pose of stoicism that she adopts under pressure.’

If the relationship was on the brink of ending here, James said that the biggest ‘tell’ might be the way Partridge’s left hand appears busy moving away out of the pose just as Rodrigo’s is moving into it.

‘As an intentional gesture, it could suggest some level of desire for an escape,’ she added.

The Daily Mail has contacted Rodrigo and Partridge’s representatives for comment.

Rodrigo and Partridge’s split came as a shock to many fans, particularly as Partridge had only just raved about his other half in an interview with Esquire UK.

Speaking to the publication in September, the House of Guinness star declared that he had ‘no doubt that we’re both in a relationship for the right reason.’

He added: ‘I’m sure that’s something you have to think about when you reach a certain level of success.

‘It’s nice to know that we can go to things together, and it’s not the maddest thing in the world that you’re sitting opposite who knows what. You’ve got a friend in those times.’

Rodrigo and Partridge first made headlines as a couple when they were spotted together in his home city, London, in October 2023.

Partridge gave insight into their romance during their time together.

In April 2024, he told British Vogue: ‘Dating probably shouldn’t be done in the public eye.

Over the summer, the couple put on a loved-up display at Wimbledon, where they were seen passionately kissing in the stands.

‘I was not aware that was going to be a thing,’ he told Esquire UK in September. ‘I did see a lot of photos from that, it felt quite public. Olivia and I choose, or have been choosing, to not be so public.’

‘Obviously, it has been quite a big summer for her with Glastonbury, but there’s a sanctity to being private.’
