The Council explained that this decision comes in response to statements issued by Mido that carried insults and cast doubt on the sporting achievements achieved by the Egyptian national team during the period from 2006 to 2010, when the “Pharaohs” under Shehata’s leadership won three consecutive titles in the African Cup of Nations in the years 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Immediately after the decision to suspend him was issued, Mido published a statement through his account on the “X” platform, which said: “I noticed during recent days that there were attempts to distort some of the statements I made in a podcast with Professor Abu Al-Maati Zaki, and take them out of their true context.”

He continued, “I affirm categorically that I did not intend in any way to belittle the Egyptian national team, to cast doubt on its achievements, or to suggest that any victories were achieved by non-sporting means. Merely thinking in this sense is illogical, especially since I was one of the members of the system that participated in achieving championships for the national team, and I was and still am proud to wear the Egyptian national team shirt and represent it.”
He stressed, “I make it clear that my speech came in a general social and cultural context, about the existence of some personal beliefs among individuals within the sports community, just like any other community, and it was not intended at all for the Egyptian national team as an institution or as a system, nor for the players or technical staff that achieved successes with effort, sweat, and sacrifices that everyone knows about.”
Mido continued, “It is known to everyone that the Egyptian national team has achieved its championships throughout its long history through work, discipline, talent, and fighting spirit, and any interpretation of my words outside of this framework is an inaccurate excerpt that does not reflect the true meaning of my statements. In conclusion, I will always remain proud to wear the national team shirt as a player, and to contribute even a small part to its achievements, and even after my retirement, and through my media work, I will remain keen to support Egyptian football with all sincerity and responsibility.”
