Musks Employees Forced To Give Up Their Faces And Voices For Sexy Annie Robot
Recent reports from the artificial intelligence startup xAI indicate that employees – specifically the team of “AI tutors” responsible for developing the Grok chatbot – were forced to sign agreements under which they permanently surrender the rights to their faces and voices to the company.
This came within the framework of a secret initiative called “Project Skippy,” which aims to collect real human data for use in training the next generation of chatbots, including a virtual companion with sexual connotations called “Annie.”
According to internal documents, these agreements granted the company a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to use, modify and distribute employees’ biometric data, without paying them any financial compensation.
The company explained to employees during a meeting chaired by lawyer Lily Lim that the goal is to make digital avatars “act and appear like humans” naturally. During the meeting, employees’ concerns emerged in the form of critical questions. One of them asked whether the company could sell their “organization” in the future, while another demanded explicit clarification about the possibility of refusing to participate in the first place, a request that was not met, as the response was limited to referring them to specific contacts in the event of “any concerns.”
These concerns deepened when employees later received a notice confirming that recording audio and video clips had become an indispensable “job requirement.” After their data was used, some employees expressed shock at the overly sexual nature of Annie’s responses, while others expressed genuine concern that their images would be misused to create deepfake clips or incorporated into other products without their knowledge or consent.
For his part, Elon Musk, who personally supervised the development of “Annie,” defended these robots, describing them as tools for emotional communication, and even predicted in a post on the “X” platform that they would contribute to increasing birth rates. This trend is consistent with reports about the marketing of “Annie” and her male companion, “Valentine,” as “sexy” virtual companions, as Musk encouraged users to try them out and personally posted clips of the female robot dancing in underwear.
These developments did not go unnoticed, as 44 U.S. Attorneys General issued warnings to xAI, Meta, and other companies of the need to protect minors from explicit content.
In response, Meta – unlike xAI – modified its bot instructions after leaked documents allowing for “sensory” chats were exposed.
It appears that the reason behind xAI’s insistence on this strategy is Musk’s frantic quest to accelerate the pace of development, as a previous report stated that he canceled public meetings and began directly personally supervising the writing of “Grok” codes in late-night sessions, with the aim of turning it into the most popular chatbot in the world, thus challenging ChatGPT, which is owned by OpenAI.
